Auffach
With it's uncrowded slopes and friendly locals, Auffach becoming a popular choice for British skiers. Auffach is a traditional Austrian village that exudes Tyrolean charm. The resort has been newly linked for the 2012/2013 season with neighbouring Alpbach to create the new Ski Juwel ski area. €13.5m as been invested in a new lift linking Auffach and the Wildschönau area with Inneralpbach and the wider Alpbachtal lift system. Expect a small village nestled in a valley, with plentiful tree line skiing into Auffach and good selection of intermediate red runs on the open mountain directly above the resort, with lifts up to 1900m. All the ski areas villages - Niederau, Oberau, Auffach and Alpbach have great beginner skiing, with twenty-four blue runs in total. But there are good opportunities for beginners to progress onto more challenging terrain with, thirty-four red runs and eleven blacks to keep you busy.
Iglu recommends Auffach for people new to skiing who are looking for a good resort to learn in and more experienced skiers who are tired of expensive, industrial scale ski areas and want something more hospitable. For a good accommodation option in Auffach look at the Gasthof Weissbacher, which has been run as a guesthouse for over 200 years.
