Ski Holidays in St Anton, Arlberg Ski Region, Austria

St. Anton has always been the number one ski resort in Austria for the UK customer. Some of the team here think it's the #1 best resort in the World. If they lift linked the other major areas of the Arlberg lift pass, Zürs and Lech to St Anton over the Valluga Peak then I'd also be tempted to say it was the best in the world. Currently you can only ski to Zürs from St Anton with a guide or take the bus through the Arlberg pass. Last year they added Warth Schröcken to Lech via a new 8 seater very fast Gondola. We checked out Warth Schröcken in March 2014 and it had the best snow conditions in the whole Arlberg region and really adds to the ski domain. Across the Valley from St Anton ski area is the Rendl ski area which offers the excellent Rendl Beach bar and restaurant area with live music most days and overlooking the Terrain Park. There are some great back country tours to be done with guides off the back of Rendl. You should also visit the smaller villages like Stuben and St Christoph in the linked ski area. Do not miss the Hospiz Alm in St Christoph for a long lunch. It’s really superb and the staff are all dressed in traditional Dirndl dresses and Lederhosen, there’s a fun slide to the bathrooms downstairs.

Altogether the Arlberg ski pass is massive and the largest in Austria. The pass presents a vast network of cable cars and lifts and, in addition to its spectacular beauty, the most reliable snow in Austria and excellent maintenance of its slopes.

St. Anton is renowned for its challenging skiing, and brings in some of the best skiers in the world. On a powder day the 1st lift is way too late to get the 1st tracks. The powder hounds with all the avalanche kit have long since hiked up and cut the nicest lines off the Valluga.  Despite having an excellent ski school we don’t usually recommend St Anton to beginners for once you are off the beginner slopes it gets steep and narrow even on Blue runs. The ski area over at Lech is much better for cruising and that’s where we would send beginners. In Lech they groom the piste all day long so that the well-heeled that lunch all afternoon don’t have to put up with any of those nasty bumps. It is a great place for a long lunch and a fast cruise on wide pistes – think Courchevel 1850 or Zermatt style. We’d recommend the Rud-Alpe Gastronomie just above the centre of Lech for a blowout lunch.

Why ski in St Anton?

Après Ski in St Anton – World #1

This is really where St Anton sets the standard for the whole world. No other resort anywhere can match the on-piste après ski entertainment of St Anton. It really is the most fun resort on the planet. There are so many great après bars I can’t mention them all but I will name the most famous ones like the Krazy Kangaruh and the Mooserwirt. The Moose sells more beer than any other bar in the Alps. They are delivered by immensely strong bar men carrying up to 30 large beers to your table (that you are dancing on) and come with shots of Jaeger or Willys mit Pear (Williams Christ Birne pear Schnapps with a ball of Pear in the shot glass). Many partiers walk up the slopes to get to the Mooserwirt or KK just to join the party. At 3pm everyday the DJ at the Moose starts the party by playing ‘The Final Countdown’ by Swedish Band, Europe, and have been doing so since 1986.

Other worthy on-piste bars with live music include the Heustadl (great bands rather than DJs) , the Rodelhütte (Piano accordion traditional oom-pah music), Taps for cheap beers next to KKs and The Fang House right next to the Nasserein Gondola – The Fang is a big favourite with the Iglu team. There are at least another 10 worth a visit.

After your aprés ski session at the on-piste bars there is the carnage of the final descent from the bars to the bottom of the pistes. Although inebriated skiing is frowned upon in many resorts, this St Anton tradition is hilarious and better than walking. We recommend one final drink to celebrate making it to the bottom of the slopes at Basecamp. This large bar is the final stop for many skiers and they do a range of excellent snacks to nibble on before heading back to your Chalet or Hotel for dinner.

There are literally dozens of good bars down on the main street of St Anton. They all deliver good times!

Non Ski Activities on Ski Holidays in St Anton

St Anton has a pedestrianised village centre and offers plenty of activities away from the piste including a cinema, ice skating, bowling, curling, sleigh rides, tobogganing and the 'Arlberg-well.com' leisure complex. The 4.2 km long illuminated tobaggan run from Gampen via the Rodelhütte to "Rodelstall" in Nasserein has to be the best in Europe. Non skiers can also make their way to many of the après ski bars and lunch restaurants to meet their groups on-piste.

Eating out in St Anton

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from in St. Anton. You can find a great range of cuisine including traditional Tyrolean fare. Some notable eateries are San Antonio, Rosanna's, Pomodoro, Dixies 1 and 2, Nassereinerhof and Bobo's. For a dinner experience that turns into a nightclub we recommend Hugos.

Ski & Spa

There is a fantastic leisure facility in the centre of St. Anton which was built for the 2001 World Alpine Skiing Championships. Within the luxurious leisure and spa facility there is a swimming area with both indoor and outdoor pools (you swim between the 2 via a man-made whirlpool), waterfalls, as well as a separate children's section with slide and play stream. There is also a steam room, solarium, gym, Finnish sauna, Kelo sauna and relaxation area. In the winter the lake in front of the fitness centre freezes and offers ice-skating and curling.
