Chalet Chamois, Courchevel 1850, France

Courcheval 1850 is reputed to be one of the best ski resorts in Europe if not the world. It isn't the best, and it can be good but overall I wouldn't choose it as somewhere to be based. The resort has a number of failings in my view. I speak as someone who has been skiing for some 35 years to maybe 25 resorts and this is my personal view. It was my first time staying in Courcheval, and will probably be my last, although I have been to the 3 Valleys four times previously). Good points: - part of the 3 Valleys (but not the best part) - relatively snow sure - good range of runs in bowl above resort - below tree line skiing for poor weather conditions Bad points: - the best part of the 3 Valleys is Val Thorens / Les Menuires - and Courcheval is a long way from them - too many cabin lifts and too few chair lifts from the resort (not good for skiers who hate taking skis off!) - very, very, very expensive (prices in mountain restaurants eye watering and aimed at rich Russians - for much better value ski to Meribel or even St Martin) - not many good and reasonable bars and restaurants (there are 16 "gastronomic" restaurants in the town, of which three I think have Michelin stars, and only one pizza bar I could find - too many rich people, especially Russians (great if you want to wear fur, buy bling and spend 100 euros plus per head on evening meals) Overall summary: unless you are a millionaire, for 3 Valleys skiing stay in Mottaret (good access to all valleys and a useful 300 mtrs above Meribel) or Val Thorens (best access to best skiing). Chalet Chamois. Good: - for Courcheval, relatively good value but you get what you pay for - on my visit had good chalet girl who cooked very good meals - though wine with meals was poor - can ski to and from chalet from piste about 100 mtrs away - not too far into town - maybe 500 mtrs Needs improvement: - However, other than Chalet girl, saw no one from our operator and was unaware that they did much to help the holiday along. - Chalet is a bit basic and needs some simple and cheap improvements (light shades, hooks to hang stuff, more drawers and cupboards in bedrooms, sufficient glasses and cups, heated ski room / boot rack).
