Ski Holidays in Flaine, France

Flaine is an excellent ski holiday destination boosting a remarkable snow record and access to 265 kilometres of varied ski runs in the Grand Massif, which connects it with the ski resort of Samoens. As a compact, purpose built resort access to the slopes is excellent, many properties are ski-in, ski-out or the closest lift is just minutes from your doorstep. The Grand Massif lift system has been well developed and maintained and makes the impressive network of nearly 80 lifts carrying 75,000 people per hour.

Home to one of the biggest board parks in Europe, ‘Jam Park’ which is almost a mile long, ski holidays in Flaine are a favourite with snowboarders. Every Sunday at the Jam Park there is a snow party, with a barbeque and DJ’s, definitely worth a visit during your ski holidays in Flaine. The resort is traffic free and divided into 3 levels, Flaine Forum, Flaine Foret and Flaine Front de Neige, which are all linked by lifts and accessible on foot. Flaine Forum is the heart of the resort where you will find the largest selection of bars and restaurants during your ski holidays in Flaine. There are a good selection of local restaurants offering traditional fondues and raclette evenings, plus pizzerias and snack bars. Many of the hotels also have good restaurants.

Flaine is one of the very best resorts for children & families. The uplift direct by telepherique; no walking; children's and beginners area in the sun. No dangerous long paths. Easy to meet up & return to hotel at lunchtime. It should be rated as ***** for beginners. The area Gers is one of the very best areas for powder. Flaine, lying as it does in a bowl is relatively sheltered from the wind. The superb design of the runs laid out by world champion racer Emile Allais take in to account runs for beginners in the sun; an icy cold area for slalomn racers only, an area for GS slalomn; different runs into the village centre so that beginners are not forced to share these runs with racing youngsters.

Hi just come back from Flaine. Really enjoyed the runs. We were all boarding, good wide slopes, nice little resort. Only bad thing was it was quite expensive but isn’t all of France?? Lucky with snow, had a good downfall while we were there...

Have skied here a number of times with friends (blacks/off piste) and family (reds/blues). Top variety of skiing for everyone. Village is great with a massive range of pubs and restaurants which are good value and don't dent the credit card. I can’t wait to get back. Everyone is so friendly.

Annoying shortcomings 08/01/2012

This resort should be excellent, with a good snow record, lots of runs with many through the trees and great convenience with most accommodation virtually on the piste. However, too many of the easier blue runs, and some greens, are served by old, fierce button pulls not suitable for beginners or those lacking confidence. To exacerbate this, the Aup de Veran gondola has been withdrawn, despite still being shown on piste maps, meaning that a good amount of blue runs through woods are only accessible by button pulls marked difficult and for expert skiers only. The DMC gondola to the top seems very susceptible to strong winds and when we were there there were some days when the only way up the mountain was via the Tetes des Verdes charilift, resulting in long queues. The links with Samoens and Les Carroz add an extra dimension but are often very busy and close quickly in bad weather. Overall, an excellent ski area but frustrating to try to make the most of. IMHO, the lift system has not seen sufficient investment and is now slightly worse than when I first visited 20 years ago.
