"If you're not too bothered by the modern French 80's architecture but value ski-in-out apartment convenience, plus access to the biggest and most varied ski terrains in the Alps, then Les Arcs must be a serious consideration. The largest and busiest village is Arc1800 with a choice of shops, bars, restaurants, cinema, etc - and the major benefit of the Transarc cable car allowing you access all the way up to the Aiguille Rouge peak at 3226m. Getting down is a fab 2000m drop to Villaroger, or Arc1600/Arc1800 if you prefer ... a real leg burner ... But I love the mountain cafes on the way, for dropping in for a coffee and crepe, like the L'Arpette - great place and friendly staff, with a sun terrace and loungers for chilling out in. Getting to Les Arcs' four ski villages is dead easy, the easiest being the train to Bourg-St-Maurice and then up the funicular cable car at the end of the platform. So what are you waiting for?!"

"Great skiing for intermediates here, especially from Arc1800 which has the fab Transarc lift over to Arc1950/2000 and the Aiguille Rouge peak at 3226m - try the 'nosebleed' run down through the trees to Villaroger - a vertical drop of 2000 metres. There is great fun in the bars and restaurants in Arc1800, which is livelier than the others. And easy access direct to Bourg-St-Maurice train station via the funicular cable car from Arc1600. Self catering apartments are good value as the sterling exchange rate is not that good right now! Good thing Arc1800 has some good supermarkets, Sherpa and Spar. The architecture is bit boring '80s French modernism but it’s a great place to ski and that's what matters! People very friendly and laid back. A much recommended resort."

"Been skiing the Tarentaise valley for years and Arc 1800 is just great - superb piste for all abilities and fantastic for intermediates/experts as its got a massive choice of runs including awesome leg-burners from the Aiguille Rouge (3226m) down to Villaroger (1200m) plus great bars and restaurants in Arc 1800 to unwind at the end of the day. Really great snow and fun! You won't be disappointed!"

"Les Arcs has a huge variety of pistes and some fabulous long leg-burning runs such as the Aiguille Rouge (3226m) down to Villandry, a vertical drop of 2000m. And in Arc 1800 there are some great restaurants and bars. Easy to get to, travel to Bourg-St-Maurice and then straight up the mountain by cablecar, or by flying to Grenoble/Lyon airports. Best value by far is self-catering as the euro exchange is not great. Ensure you get a ski-in-out apartment near the Transarc lift which accesses all the ski pistes, eg the Mirantin, Archeboc, Aiguille Grive Apartments. Also the Sherpa or Spar supermarkets in Arc 1800 have good food and wine and even rotisserie roasted chickens, pork hocks, etc. The ski passes are not cheap, but you can economise with a half-day 12.30pm+ afternoon pass or a 4-hour daily pass. 'Popcorn' are a good value ski hire shop. For a laid-back cosy evening try the Golf Hotel bar with its huge log fireplace and free live jazz music. Arc 1800 is the best of all the villages I think, though Arc 1950 has some good if expensive restaurants. Les Arcs has the largest 'Paradiski' piste area in all of Europe with over 400km of pistes so it’s fantastic for intermediate skiers and snowboarders ... definitely worth a visit!"

Ski holidays in Les Arcs can be in one of four top resorts, which are also surrounded by some of the best skiing in the world, each of them is worthy of a week's skiing alone: Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 1950 and Arc 2000. Les Arcs is linked to La Plagne by the The Vanoise Express double decker cable car, the only of its type ever made, creating the Paradiski area, the new link and the new village of Arc 1950 will make Les Arcs the next big ski chalet holiday hotspot. Close by resorts of the Trois Vallees and the Espace Killy ski area allow some nice day trips to be made to other areas on your ski holidays in Les Arcs. Val d’Isere and Tignes are only a short drive away.

Les Arcs Ski Resort Areas:

On your ski holidays in Les Arcs, there is plenty of choice for all standards and levels. Les Arcs is purpose built and is home to the ski evolutif method of teaching and has an Olympic speed skiing course. The satellite village Les Arc Peisey Nancroix is situated close to the ski area with good connections. They are traditional villages whose economies are as much based on skiing as farming. On your ski holidays in Les Arcs France, soak up the charming French atmosphere. Apres ski is limited to a small selection of bars and restaurants.

Skiing in Les Arcs

Beginners: Nursery slopes are conveniently situated above all three villages of Les Arcs. Arc 1800 is the best providing sunny and spacious runs. Easy greens are hard to find but there are some gentle blues like Mont Blanc above Arc 1600, and some snow sure easy runs down from Col de la Chal to Arc 2000.

Intermediates: One of the strengths of ski holidays in Les Arcs is the diversity of choice for intermediate skiers. Most main routes have an easy and a more difficult alternative ideal for mixed-ability groups. Plenty of challenges for the adventurous and less confident intermediates will rejoice that they can move around the area without to many suprises. Les Arc Peisey Vallandry is great for the speed hungry groomer fans, while both ends of the full domain contain some great wooded runs. Higher up the runs get steeper but are friendly due to good grooming.

Experts: There is much to offer experts on ski holidays in Les Arcs. The Aiguille Rouge peak offers some excellent blacks with nice steeps located above Arc 2000. A couple blacks are spread amongst the other areas as well. For some beautifull wooded runs head over to either Arc Villaroger Le Pré on one side or Les Arc Peisey Vallandry on the other. One run stands out with a vertical drop of over 2000m you can go from the top of the Arguille Rouge ridge down to the village of Arc Villaroger Le Pre, with some great variations throughout. Off-piste opportunities for ski holidays in Les Arcs are numerous as is typical of great Alpine ski resorts.

Snowboarders: Self proclaimed 'home of the snowboard' Les Arcs holds a certain attraction for boarders. Les Arcs offers budget self-catering and ski chalet holidays with a great mix of terrain, boarder friendly lifts, a good sized park and half pipe.

Ste Foy is where guides from Val d’Isere and Tignes come on their days off. It is a beautiful unspoilt resort with skiing for all standards and fantastic off piste available with a guide. Queues are unheard of. There are a few restaurants and bars. As the locals say “Come to Ste Foy before everyone else does.” Access to the skiing of La Rosière and Les Arcs is easy.
