Helmets 'make ski holidays safer'

Wearing a ski helmet can make family ski holidays safer, it has been reported.

According to the Ski Club of Great Britain, research carried out by scholars at the University of Washington in Seattle shows that wearing head protection such as a helmet can reduce injury on the slopes by 15 per cent.

The study compared people injured in three ski resorts over a five-year period and established that wearing helmets while on ski holidays is safer than not doing so.

"It's estimated just under half of all people in North America wear a helmet and 64 per cent of children do so," the Ski Club noted.

It added that the popularity of ski helmets both in North America and on European ski holidays is on the rise.

The findings seem to back up studies conducted in Canada and Norway which also found evidence that ski helmets can reduce the risk of head injury, according to Reuters.
