Ski resorts see heavy snowfall

Ski enthusiasts in the UK may be interested to hear that several winter sports resorts across Europe and the rest of the world have opened early following heavy snowfall.

Austria, France and Switzerland have all reported deep blankets of snow and many resorts are opening early to take advantage of the conditions, which are unusual for the time of year in many cases.

Indeed, Zermatt in Switzerland has already been covered in 220 centimetres on its upper slopes and so too has Obergurgl in Austria.

Alyn Morgan from the Ski Club of Great Britain commented: "The winter ski season really feels like it is upon us. It bodes well for good early season conditions and hopefully good snow cover for the festive period."

According to the Independent, some 1.35 million people went on ski holidays last season, either independently or on a package trip.

Robin Edwards, an instructor at Sheffield's indoor Ski Village, said the facility has been busier than last year as people seek to practice before they take to the slopes for real.
