Zagreb mistake costs Vonn World Cup lead

A mistake by Lindsey Vonn in last weekend's World Cup slalom in Zagreb has cost her the overall lead of the World Cup standings.

Hampered by injuries to her hand and arm, the American missed the 15th gate on her second run and as a result failed to finish the race.

This paved the way for Sandrine Aubert of France to win, and also led to Maria Riesch of Germany overtaking Vonn at the top of the World Cup standings after a fourth-place finish.

The German now has 599 points to her name, with Vonn in second place with 594 and Kathrin Zettel of Austria, who finished second in Zagreb, third with 569.

However, in an interview with the Associated Press, US coach Trevor Wagner believes two-time defending champion Vonn will be fighting fit by the time the women's World Cup circuit reconvenes in Haus im Ennstal, Austria, for two downhills and a super-G.

"She's still a little tentative with her arm, but it's healing up nicely and she'll get another good break before going into speed races in Austria next weekend," he told the news provider.

In addition to clinching last year's overall World Cup championship, Vonn also secured gold medals in the downhill and super-G disciplines at the World Championships in Val d'Isere.
