Ever fancied skiing in Italy but always found the transfers are a little too long or the flights aren't flexible enough? Well the Italian city of Aosta, sat in the famous Aosta Valley, has just finished redeveloping its runway to take 116 seater planes.
The historic city is 10 minutes from Pila, under an hour from Courmayeur and Cervinia, and only around 90 minutes from the likes of Verbier, Chamonix and Gressoney. With work on the terminal expected to be completed by December 2011 we could have an exciting new arrival point for the Alps. Last week the airport successfully tested the extended runway with 116 seater planes and hopefully the work will be completed and safety issues tested ready for next winter.
The airport's authority are currently in talks with airlines to add routes into Aosta and have enjoyed positive discussion for flights from the UK, Sweden, France and Switzerland. Due to the runway matching the size of London City airport and the same capacity planes it looks as a deal could be on the cards to run ski season flights between the destinations. With BA and Swiss both currently offering ski flights into a Chambery, Geneva and Switzerland the Aosta city airport could be of interest to them.
The additional flights would mean good news for skiers due to easy access to several resorts, more flexibility on dates and of course the fact that Italy offers some of the best value skiing in the Alps. Fingers crossed this will go ahead and we can all enjoy the benefits.
