British snowboarder takes silver

British snowboarder Zoe Gillings has become the first female to clinch a medal in a World Cup snowboard event in almost four years, it has been announced.

The 22-year-old competitor took home the silver medal in her snowboard cross race at the FIS World Cup this weekend.

The competition took place in Japan and has elevated her to fourth place overall in the current World Cup rankings, the Ski Club of Great Britain reports.

According to the BBC Gillings was "delighted" with the results despite being beaten to the gold medal by Canadian participant Maelle Ricker.

However, she revealed her ambitions for future glory, commenting: "It's amazing to be back on the podium, and I'd really like gold next time."

Gillings, from the Isle of Man, has been snowboarding since the age of ten according to an interview with Snowsport GB.

US skier Bode Miller recently impressed crowds on European ski holidays with his performance in the alpine skiing World Cup.
