Poncin misses out on second title

Date: 30 Apr 2009
UK speed skier Marc Poncin has missed out on clinching his second world title by a narrow margin.

The 42-year-old, who was crowned champion in 2008 and races in the production category, came second to Austrian Austria's Gunter Foidl, reports BBC Sport.

By finishing as the runner-up in the World Cup standings, Poncin becomes the first competitor from the UK to end up in the top three twice.

Graham Bell, the former British Olympic skier, told the High Altitude TV show that speed skiing is "a great adrenaline buzz".

Although the sport is not yet featured at the Winter Olympics, hopes are growing that it will be included by the time the 2018 tournament comes around.

Recently, it emerged that Austrian skier Gregor Schlierenzauer has been voted as Nordic King by members of the Nordic Ski Commission of the International Sports Press Association.

Meanwhile, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen was named the Biathlete of the Year.
