Guay claims World Cup super G title
Erik Guay's late season burst of form has seen him claim overall World Cup victory in the super G event.

The Canadian followed up on victory at the penultimate event in Kvitfjell with another error-free run in challenging conditions at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.

Guay posted a winning time of 1:26.36 minutes and this took him to 331 points in the super G World Cup standings, which was enough to narrowly overhaul Austria's Michael Walchhofer and Norway's Winter Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal.

The result also means that the 28-year-old becomes the first Canadian in 28 years to capture a World Cup crystal globe.

He said: "I didn't think it would happen today, I was so far behind.

"But I knew that if I won today I would have a chance so I took maximum risks and it paid off. It was wild."

Guay arrived in Germany with 69 points to make up, but Walchhofer blew his chance by finishing 15th, while Svindal could only claim third.

Svindal took gold in the super G event on the Whistler course in Vancouver by setting the fastest time ahead of Bode Miller and Andrew Weibrecht.
