Wengen plays home to the Lauberhorn, one of the infamous downhill races of the season that includes a 40ft jump and has seen previous winner Bode Miller so exhausted by the end of the course he collapsed over the line into first place. The high speed course is the longest of the competition, one of the most exciting to watch and leg burning to ski.
Having endured a decent start to the season the Swiss were hoping to dominate one of their pride and joy home races and with two podium finishes they should have been happy. With Didier Cuche in first and Carlo Yanka in second domination of the event was definitely on the agenda, until Austria's Klaus Kroell burst their bubble taking the win with a 0.14 second margin.
Cuche had been on good form all weekend but the slightest of mistakes half way down the course cost him the home victory.
With an Austrian skier enjoying a famous victory on Swiss snow their fans partied hard into the night, both in Wengen and at home. Next week the World Cup heads to the Hannekamm in Austria's stunning resort of Kitzbuhel, where the Swiss will be hoping to for revenge.
Sunday played host to the slalom, which offered much less drama. On from Croatian, Ivica Kostelic, wrapped up his third win of the season and he was joined on the podium by Austria's Marcel Hirscher and France's Jean-Baptiste Grange. Austria's skiers rounded off a great weekend with 5th and 6th, adding three top six slalom finishes to Saturday's double podium in the downhill.
The World Cup is in full flow now and next week's race should bring us plenty more drama and excitement.
