Hollingsworth hoping to hit her peak at Whistler

Mellisa Hollingsworth is hoping that she will be at the peak of her powers to claim a gold medal in the women's skeleton event at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The 29-year-old Canadian claimed the bronze model in the discipline four years ago in Turin and also has a World Championship silver medal to her name from 2000.

However, she heads to Vancouver as the number one-ranked competitor in the field after finishing on the podium in seven out of eight World Cup events during the winter.

And Hollingsworth feels that she should now be in even better shape when arriving in Whistler, as this is what her training and preparation has been geared towards.

Speaking to the Edmonton Journal, she said: "Our sport is not an endurance sport, it's just power and speed.

"My dryland training and everything is setting me up to be peaking at the Olympic Games, knowing all the work we've doing right now is for that one race in Whistler."

Hollingsworth added that she knows it is a once in a lifetime race to be trying to claim a gold medal in her home country.

The Canadian finished behind Switzerland's Maya Pedersen-Bieri and Shelley Rudman of Great Britain at the last Winter Olympics.
