Record speeds predicted for men's luge at Whistler

Record speeds could be reached during the men's luge at the 2010 Winter Olympics after Austria's Manuel Pfister set a new milestone during training for the event.

The 21-year-old was clocked at speeds of 154 kilometres per hour shooting down the Whistler Sliding Centre course, which exceeds that registered at the same track by German world champion Felix Loch last year.

However, the time has led to speculation that speed limits may have to be set on other tracks in the future in an effort to keep competitors safe.

According to Reuters, Wolfgang Harder, a spokesman for the FIL, luge's governing body, said: "We are going to have to put in speed limits for the next track which will be built for sure for the next Olympics. We think 155 kilometres per hour should be the limit.

"If you stick your head out of the sunroof of a car at 155 kilometres per hour you can imagine how that would feel. In our opinion safety is the most important thing."

However, Pfister's time will not go down in the record books as the fastest ever because it was not set in competition.

Adam Rosen is Britain's sole representative in the men's luge event in Vancouver.
