Skiers advised: Build up your stamina European ski holidays, they are being advised to get in shape before they hit the slopes.

The advice comes from Halifax, which notes that a third of British skiers believed themselves to be out of condition when they took to the pistes last year.

Most of the skiers questioned claimed that the switch to high impact activity became noticeably painful on the third day of skiing.

"A few months of pre-holiday training can help you to cope with the strain of winter sports, as well as to build up your stamina," commented Paul Birkhead, Senior Manager of Pricing and Underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance.

He added that holidaymakers who do not find time to train before their ski holiday should be aware of their limits and ensure they take breaks, "to help their body recover".

The advice comes after it was revealed that Verbier opened for skiing this weekend.

Good snow drives ski holiday bookings
It looks to be a great season for skiers as exceptional conditions and some fantastic resorts combine to tempt holidaymakers into hitting the slopes.

Although European ski holidays may have always been popular, ski lift operator Compagnie des Alpes claims business is already up by 14 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Excellent conditions were cited for the rise in bookings, the company said according to the Ski Club of Great Britain.

Meanwhile, tour operators have also seen boosted sales in snow sports holidays thanks to early snowfalls that persuaded people to jet off for a break on the piste.

Compagnie des Alpes operates in French resorts such as Tignes, France. The country is currently experiencing milder temperatures and more light to moderate snow is forecast from Wednesday of next week, according to the BBC.

The news provider suggested that sunny weather is causing the snow to soften towards the end of each day.

Travel tips issued for skiers family ski holidays to Europe and beyond have been issued with a set of tips on how to get the most out of their packing.

The Ski Club of Great Britain is advising travellers jetting off on European ski holidays and North America ski holidays to maximise their packing potential by stuffing boots with extra goods.

Another way to create more room in the suitcase is to wear bulky ski jackets to the airport, the Ski Club notes.

Insurance policy details should be kept in wallets, while tools for adapting skis and so forth should not be stored in pockets as they will be confiscated at the airport.

It is advised that goggles are kept in hand luggage so that if the main luggage goes missing skiers are not left on the slopes squinting, while small and valuable items should be kept at the bottom of the baggage.

Before leaving the house, skiers should make sure they have charged their iPods and packed their adaptors and phone chargers.

Checking snow reports is also advised - although those travelling on European ski holidays this weekend will no doubt already be aware that snow is forecast across the Alps and beyond.

Where to ski in April European ski holidays this April.

For those who plan to head overseas for some late season skiing this week, conditions are mixed in Europe, with the best skiing reportedly to be had on the colder upper slopes of many ski resorts, according to the Ski Club of Great Britain.

Reporting milder conditions across French resorts, the Ski Club recommends the upper slopes for "excellent skiing".

"The resorts in the Pyrenees are doing well following a drop in temperatures over the weekend," the Ski Club added.

For fresh snow and good depths, ski holidays in Les Deux Alpes are recommended, as are ski holidays in Chamonix.

Les Deux Alpes to begin electric bus service Les Deux Alpes is to boost its green credentials by running trials of an electric bus service.

Les Deux Alpes has been working in association with electricity provider EDF to look into the viability of the carbon neutral vehicles to transport skiers and tourists around the area, reports 2alpesnet.com.

During the Easter holidays, two electric buses - a 22 and 45-seater - will run in addition to the existing ski bus service.

The resort has also pledged to ensure a proportion of its power comes from renewable energy sources, a commitment it has been developing with eco association Mountain Riser and the Parc National des Ecrins.

Les Deux Alpes has 200km of piste on offer to skiers and one snowboard park.

Off-piste, guests can enjoy the heated outdoor pool, cinema, ice rink and numerous shops.

Rhone-Alps 'the jewel in the crown of France's ski regions'
With Vancouver set to host the 2010 Winter Olympics in just a couple of months, many Canadians are already looking to get away for a few weeks, with a significant number likely to look to the guaranteed snowfall and challenging pistes of France for their winter-fix.

Writing in the Toronto Sun, travel expert Ilona Kauremszky advised one such couple that the Rhone-Alps region hasn't gained its reputation as one of the finest skiing and snow-boarding destinations on the planet for nothing.

"The Rhone-Alpes region is by far the jewel in the crown of France's ski regions. No wonder," she wrote.

"The world's largest ski area - imagine six major ski resorts in one place and you get the picture- the area is also heaven for non-skiers as spas and gastronomy are popular."

The Rhone-Alps region has hosted the Winter Olympics on three separate occasions and it boasts excellent transport connections to the major cities of Lyon and Geneva in Switzerland.

Fantastic Feb After 40cm Falls in Europe February marks the start of the busiest two months in the Alps. Thanks to half-term and a history of good snow, pleasant sunshine and perfect pistes, February and March are as popular as New Year in the Alps. And after a mixed month of snow in January it looks like the chalet host snow dances are going to pay off.

Over the weekend cold conditions enabled the snow cannons to work their magic along with mother nature. Cervinia, on the Italian side of the Matterhorn enjoyed 35cm in 24hrs and Sauze d'Oulx boasted 40cm over the same period. After some heavy snowfall the next few days will see a light dusting across the Italian resorts with the Milky Way expecting the most snow.

North America is also enjoying great conditions at the moment. Canada leads the way with Banff and Lake Louise boasting 38cm of snow on Saturday and Fernie getting a decent 25cm top-up. This week will see another 8cm in Whistler and 5cm-10cm in Big White and Kicking Horse. As expected Colorado is where to be in the U.S.A. with Crested Butte boasting 15cm of powder and everywhere from Aspen to Telluride looking forward to 5-10cm of snow this week.

Back in Europe and to Switzerland where the slopes are looking pretty good thanks to last week's snowfall. Flims Laax, Davos, Engelberg and St. Moritz, to name a few, all had some decent snowfall and this week sees the country under a light, white blanket with up the 5cm on its way.

Over the weekend most of Austria and France benefitted from a couple of centimetres of snow and this week looks the same. Though no significant amounts are forecast quite yet, every bit of mother nature's finest will add to the tonnes of man made snow that will be hitting the big resorts in the cold weather.
