And for those who seek some autumnal snow action, France could be the destination to head for ski holidays in Chamonix, with the resort listed at number two in the rankings, right behind Val Thorens ski holidays at number one.

The Guardian reports that in the Chamonix valley there is "almost always good skiing" thanks to a variety of eleven ski areas which are covered by its lift pass.

Furthermore, it notes: "If the weather socks in, there is the insurance of woody Les Houches for piste and tree skiing."

Also, the publication adds, ski holidays in Chamonix also benefit from a sociable atmosphere during low ski season as it is an actual town rather than simply a seasonal ski resort - meaning that it boasts a permanent populous.

Chamonix could also appeal to those on family ski holidays thanks to its three smaller valley ski areas, which it claims are "ideal for children [and] beginners".]]>

Ski holidays 'not just for skiers'
According to moneysupermarket.com, one in six holidaymakers you might find frequenting fondue restaurants on ski holidays in Chamonix are there for the apres ski alone and intend to spend no time on their skis.

Furthermore, it is northerners who are most likely to make up the 16 per cent of holidaymakers who spend their European ski holidays off the slopes and in the shops with 22 per cent of this group not ever taking to the pistes.

"The apres ski spirit is an important part of most ski trips, but it's surprising how many holidaymakers now go for the good times alone and never set foot on the slopes," Peter Gerrard of moneysupermarket.com noted.

However for the majority of holidaymakers who do head to the mountains for actual skiing, many more ski resorts opened in Europe this weekend.

In France, Meribel and Courchevel opened for winter skiing, while nearby Val Thorens opened earlier in the season.

Snow predictions for holiday season
According to the Ski Club, sunny skies are anticipated for those enjoying ski holidays in Chamonix and ski holidays in Zermatt while those on ski holidays in Les Deux Alpes can expect some snowshowers.

Meanwhile, those taking North American ski holidays to places like Canada can look forward to more snowfall.

"It's very cold at the moment reaching a top temperature of about minus five degrees Celsius in the afternoon, and together with the wind chill this is keeping the snow in great condition," Ski Club of Great Britain rep Jane Billington reported of conditions in Austria.

She added that conditions were "generally fantastic", especially when compared to the ski season last year.

Most major European ski resorts are now open for the 2007-08 ski season.

Skiers advised 'be sensible with the apres ski' European ski holidays this month have been issued with advice on drinking alcohol while on the slopes.

According to the BBC, while apres- ski is an integral part of a ski holiday for many, there are concerns that drinking too much on the slopes could compromise a skier's safety and the safety of those around them.

And those on North America ski holidays should be aware that some resorts impose fines on drunk skiers and also reserve the right to confiscate their lift pass.

The Ski Club of Great Britain's Betony Garner told the BBC: "Apres-ski is fine, [when] you're off the hill, as long as you're sensible. When you're actually on the mountain, just think about whether you should be drinking."

She noted that altitude can make you get drunk more quickly and that it is important to drink plenty of water.

Sticking to a single drink was also recommended.

Swedish skier tackles 'world's highest slopes'
Over the next three years he will attempt to ski Mount Everest, K2 and Kangchenjunga, in the hope of becoming the first person ever to do so.

The first part of Fredrik's challenge starts this week when he travels to the Himalayas to begin his ascent to the summit of Kangchenjunga.

He pointed out that as well as becoming the first Swede to ski the mountain, he will also be the first to climb it.

"We will carry all our equipment; we have randonneboots on our feet and will not use supplemental oxygen. Therefore it's harder for us to climb the mountain than for most of the other climbers," he added.

A professional skier, Fredrick spends his winters travelling around European ski resorts such as Chamonix in the French Alps.
