Most of us don't think about skiing when we think about Las Vegas, it's usually the glamour, bright lights and gambling that take our attention, but the local's resort near Mount Charleston is hoping to change that.
The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, which currently covers around 70 acres of skiing and employs around 200 locals, has announced that the resort near to Mount Charleston will be undergoing a $35 million expansion after plans put forward to the U.S. Forest Service were finally approved.
The resort is expected to undergo steady development, with the final renovations due for completion in 2020. The resort will be expanded to 500 acres and will include 50 trails, 10 lifts and two new base stations. There will also be a reservoir with a 30 million gallon capacity giving the resort the ability to maintain snowmaking facilities on the lower slopes.
Kevin Stickelman, President and General Manager of the ski resort, said "there will be enough water storage capacity to make snow on lower and mid-mountain runs,". He also said that the resort will hire mostly locals, which will be good news to the area with an approximate of 400 additional members of staff required.
Currently the resort relies on a mostly local crowd, based only 30 miles from downtown Las Vegas, but with the resort coming up to international standards Stickelman is hoping the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort will attract a much more diverse crowd.
