Sunderland Council has announced plans for the first indoor slope in the North East. The plan is to build an indoor real snow slope, ice-rink, sports shops, bar and restaurants next to the city's football ground the Stadium of Light.
The plans to bring real snow to the North-East are a real boost for budding skiers and snowboarders in the area. Currently the nearest slopes are Chill Factor in Manchester, Xscape at Cas-Vegas (Castleford) and the Xscape in Glasgow. The hope is to develop a great local scene that has put places like Hemel Hempsted and Tamworth Snowdome on the map.
With the closure of Corus leading to economic decline, the council hope that the project will shine some light on the area and has enlisted the help of Sunderland arc, the local regeneration company, to make it happen.
Though there is bound to be much interest from skiers, boarders and local businesses alike, the plans are a long way from complete. Hopefully the transition from idea to reality will be much smoother than the High Wycombe project.
