Whistler to open early

Whistler to open early One of the world's top ski resorts, Whistler Mountain, has opened early this year, officials have announced.

The early opening on Wednesday meant anyone taking a Thanksgiving trip could hit the slopes to work off their turkey, with neighbouring Blackcomb Mountain also opening its slopes early on November 27th, travmedia.com reports.

Stuart Rempel, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Whistler Blackcomb, is quoted by the website as saying: "The 2008/2009 season is finally upon is, and we're gearing up for Whistler Blackcomb's most exciting season yet.

"With the […] one year countdown to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games taking place in February, we're thrilled to kick this season off and start skiing."

Snow guns were used on both mountains to compact the existing snow and make a smooth surface for skiers, snowmaking manager Jodie McCutcheon added.

Other important events in the Whistler ski resort calendar this year include the 15th annual Spirit of Winter Show and the Bizarre Bazaar.
