champs Avellin spring break - 09/04/2019
Overall

The chalet was more like a small hotel, the staff were great very attentive, the food was okay nothing special but made up for by the excellent wine served with dinner. The rooms were basic and the mattress I had definitely needed replacing but it was clean and tidy no major faults. Access from La Daille was great for the slopes the new gondola up to La Follie Douce was great and fast so even in springtime when the snow lower down was very soft you could catch the gondola back to the hotel no more than 100 yards away. As I got a good price for my trip I would highly recommend this hotel for a spring break.

Incredibly impressed with the service we received throughout our time at Champs Avalins. The chalet was clean, warm and the rooms were well sized. The staff were very polite and helpful- they would always try their best to accomdate any requests. The food was excellent and far exceeded my expectations. This was a real highlight of the Chalet. In addition the free wine was not the standard box wine you get on ski holidays, but genuinely nice stuff- a really pleasant surprise. Location wise, you can not beat this place. You can ski to within 50m of the chalet. It’s located next to a regular and highly dependentable bus service which takes you all around the resort! 10/10 would go again !

Stayed at the Champs Avalin Hotel in la Daille just down the road from Val D'Isere. Basically, if you are looking for basic half board accommodation that is reasonably priced in the middle of the Espace Killy, then this will fit your bill. The food was good on an evening, although the choice was limited (I felt this was not as advertised) & there was plenty of wine. Breakfast was plentiful and a good selection for different tastes, although the addition of porridge would be good. There was no TV in room (sure this was advertised). Internet connection was poor but workable in the restaurant, but completely unworkable in our room. The staff was great; friendly, approachable and helpful. They all had a good knowledge of the area and local facilities. Last year I was spoiled at a 5* resort in Wengen, so this was never going to live up to that, but I went to ski so at the end of the day, it was fine.

The chalet hotel was in a superb location, just a couple of minutes walk from the major bubble to access pretty much the whole resort from there. The rooms were very basic, a little more basic than we were expecting, especially for the price paid. But the food and location more than made up for that. The food and wine selection was outstanding - although the portions looked small, they were packed with protein every night and I dont think there was a meal that I actually completed fully, there was just so much. Great selection of accompanying vegetables as well for those health conscious. The only real downside of the hotel is the size of the boot room - it is way too small for the number of people who need to use it. And there is no space to put on your boots either. Again, a minor negative, but one that can make a frustrating difference. The chalet staff were all absolutely superb, cannot speak highly enough of them. Thanks for a great stay.

Alternative Val D'Isere - 10/04/2011

For cheap thrills, nothing beats the Lessieres lift — who needs a rollercoaster! For a glittering cocktail, head to the Grand Marnier establishment for a drink in a container that lights up when shaken — though not stirred! For surreal views, get out for first lift and as you ascend gaze at the snow capped peaks against a bleu (NB this is not a typo) blue background (Yves Saint Laurent would be proud of it!) For detox, get up early and breathe the fresh mountain air - it feels pure What is left at the end of the season? Crystal-clear melted snow-water and a glacier that glistens and beckons all season round. How to round off an afternoon of top-notch skiing? Head to the 'Grizzly Bear' for a surreal 'Heidi on speed' experience. You'll have to go there yourself to check out the hand-carving skills.
