Afternoon tea in Saalbach.

Half past four in Saalbach and the slopes have just closed. The Austrians and Germans are trooping off to the bars for beer and schnapps, but being British we are heading for our chalet for afternoon tea and cake.

It’s a welcome reward after a day skiing with my teenage daughter who is super fit and could ski down mountains all day. The reps do a guided tour starting at Schattberg Ost and covering the slopes of Saalbach, Leogang and Hinterglemm and after 32km (26 miles) returning to the starting point. 13 started the tour, four finished and I wasn’t one of them, but my daughter was. I had to admit that I wasn’t as serious a skier as I liked to think I was, as I found myself tempted by the Alms houses on the slopes, with hot gluwein and fantastic views, especially when my legs were burning and wanting a break, but my daughter was. I was proud of her managing the whole tour, and that she was now so much better at doing something that I had once taught her to do.

My daughter loved the holiday and after a long chat with Kerry the chalet maid, told me that when she was older she was going to have a gap year and do something like that. So one day I might be back visiting my daughter the expert skier and enjoying tea and cake with her again after fun on the slopes.
