Great ski holiday Jan 2012 27/02/2012
Chalet is nice, no major frills but comfortable and cosy. We paid supp to get balcony with views of Kitzsteinhorn. Staff great food very good- cake at 5pm and aperitif and canapés before dinner, and wine (French) also surprisingly good and I am fussy about wine!! Kit store fine. Local to town of Kaprun. Bus stop is about 300m metres from chalet no real issue there. Bar 350m. There is really only a bus if you want to get some proper pisteing in. Otherwise a 10 min walk to Mayskogel lift, which is restricted in terms of level and runs, although a great warm up for a day or so. As long as you allow for 15-20 min bus journeys there is some great skiing either at Zell am see, tree lined twisty reds and easy icy blacks or on the glacier at the Kitzsteinhorn long open reds and a few steep blacks, mostly chairs some with heated seats and canopies. Quite barren and no trees on glacier but still some great stuff and plenty of official and non official off piste reds/blacks. Great bars all over mountains. Got very cold, not that I was bothered but 2/3 days it was 25deg below on the tops so wrap up. Would also highly recommend Tauern Spa in Kaprun - hot pools sauna, treatments etc really good value and great experience. Resort is quite quiet but the few bars that do exist are not rammed and apres ski is relaxed and fun as age group is older. Good ski hire at Sport 2000 or Intersport which seem to own half the area!! On mountain cost of lunch really reasonable compared with say France. For my first ski holiday in 25 yrs and I'm 45 it was ruddy fantastic and will def go back there. If however you are looking for a chalet with log fire and sauna or a really relaxed large communal seating area, well you'll just have to pay a bit more a go somewhere else. I went to ski not too take in the social atmosphere in the chalet- I had a few beers apres but primarily I spent my money to ski not to drink, as I can drink in England far cheaper thanks. Great holiday, thanks iglu, and I do love Austria.
