Overall

Just returned from a week in Schladming staying at Hotel Kirchenwirt. We had a great week there. It was fantastic skiing and conditions, and the hotel was lovely. Really welcoming staff, lovely traditional setting and food, and a great location. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel and resort.

Schladming - a little gem - 08/04/2011
Overall

Both my wife and I have boarded and skiied in a number of resorts in Austria, from the classy slopes of St Anton to the little known resort of Schoppernau, where the mountain plays host mainly to the locals and a few cows! Now we have a new find to add to our list, Schladming, and we can't understand why we haven't been before. We certainly know that we will be visiting again. A short transfer from Salzburg, about 1 hour, and then the opportunity to ski the whole of the Ski Amade. Admittedly you would be better off with a hire car if you intended to do this but there are several mountains close at hand to ski, with the local buses included on your lift pass. The town is friendly and welcoming and offers a wide variety of experiences, from a friendly tea room for coffee and kuchen to the five floors of apres ski in the bar right at the foot of the new planet planai ski station. The skiing was impressive. I was converting from boarding back to skiing and took a lesson on the first day. The instruction was superb and gave me the confidence to search out all the cruising blues and reds that the resort has to offer. Not too many challenging blacks but it looked as though with the right conditions there was plenty of opportunity for off piste adventures. The condition of the slopes was excellent and all pistes were well groomed and stayed in good condition until mid afternoon. Excellent considering we were basking in the mountain restaurants at 14°c at lunch time! The hotel is a small family run establishment, with friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are quirky and they have their own charm as is typical in an austrian resort. We were well pleased and the food offered variety and was to an excellent standard. Ease of transport up the mountain makes it a really family friendly resort
