Ski Holiday Review 27/04/2011
Fantastic!

Snow the previous week had topped up the slopes, so combined with beautiful spring weather we had the best skiing holiday ever.

We bought an all star lift pass that meant we could ski Soll, Elmau, Kaprun, Hopfgarten, Westendorf, and if we'd had time we could have skied Zell am Zee. I don't think we skied the same slope twice! The local train service (from the bottom of the Kitzbuhl gondola) was brilliant - a few stops and you are at the base of Hopfgarten ski area, a short walk takes you straight to the gondola. Plus there were buses to take you to other areas.

The meals at the hotel were varied and plentiful. There was always a choice of three mains each meal and the quantities so large that even after a hard day skiing I couldn't do the meal justice (and I'm a big eater!) The breakfasts offered a cooked option so there was something for everyone.

The staff were delightful and very helpful. They even made me a special cheesecake for my birthday. And the bar sold cider!

The only drawbacks were that there were no train or area bus timetables in the hotel (only the local bus timetable) so we had a little difficulty finding out where to get the bus in the morning to some areas and what time it went. It was also a shame that the hotel was past its best. For example our room had a lavatory through a side door, the shower was immediately as you entered the room, but you had to go through another door to arrive in the bedroom where the handbasin was located!

There was a 10 minute walk to the main Kitzbuhl gondola but you could hire a locker under the gondola to store equipment, or take the ring bus. However in normal walking boots the walk wasn't too bad especially as the town was so picturesque.

Overall a fantastic holiday

We booked this on a half board basis.

It was one of the only options for 3 adults, which is why we chose it initially upon also discovering that the slopes catered for our different skill levels.

For the price we really weren't expecting much, and thought the food might be out of tins and rooms cardboard boxes with bunk beds.

We were relieved to see that the beds were very comfortable and the room quite spacious. On the downside the bathroom doors didn't close properly and it is obvious that the hotel is in need of refurbishments.

The food was amazing and we couldn't believe to be getting such nice and proper food! Half board in my opinion is the best option as you're never really going to come down all the way to the hotel (our snow conditions were ok but there was absolutely no way that you could ski all the way to the hotel) for lunch.

Personally I found the staff a little bit over enthusiastic, but I know my friends thought they were brilliant.

We booked a last minute deal with Igluski and were extremely impressed with the service on booking.

Flights, transfers etc. went flawlessly, the very short transfer from Salzburg to Kitzbuhel being a nice surprise after some arduous ski resort transfers in the past. First impressions of the hotel Tyrol were that it was a little shabby but it was clean and warm and the Neilson staff were brilliant. We were there on a half board basis and food was plentiful and of a very high standard.

Never having been to Kitzbuhel before we were a little concerned at the altitude of the resort for skiing at the end of March but the snow conditions were perfect and the resort and pistes were well maintained.

Overall a fantastic holiday start to finish. We would certainly go again.

Thinking of going back there ourselves next year!

We stayed at the Tyrol in Feb 2011. Location of hotel great, rooms basic, food basic but good. The resort is gorgeous and the aprés brilliant but check the snow... it's very low and while we were there it was very warm (15C) - great for sunbathing, not so great for snowboarding. Resort is very spread out and not especially well linked so be prepared for a long bus ride back if you go traveling. It's very much an intermediate resort - beginners and experts aren't very well catered for though there is a very good snow park. All in all Kitzbuhel is great for a snowboarding holiday that's not just about the snow as the town has so much more to offer - it's fun, romantic and picturesque and should you get a good dump probably a great place to board too!

I stayed here in January 2006 it’s a cosy friendly no-frills hotel. Good basic home-cooked food. Convenient level ground location. 10 min walk to main gondola. I recommend locker for skis at gondola station. No safes in rooms but reception has safe. It is a child friendly hotel. This is a good basic reasonably priced family friendly base.
