Review 01/12/2005

Meet at the Whistler Village Gondola at 7am to take part in Fresh Tracks. Running daily, Fresh tracks offers skiers and snowboarders early morning uploading privileges on Whistler Mountain for one hour before the slopes officially open for the day to the rest of the skiers and boarders. In addition to being among the first on the slopes, you’ll also receive a mountain-sized hot breakfast at the Roundhouse Restaurant. Fresh Tracks is available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and costs CAD $15.42 for adults and CAD $11.30 for children. Insider tip: The best days to go are after a big snowfall.

  • Best bars - The Amsterdam (in Village Square. Get in by 16:30 before the rush!), Tommy Africas (nightclub), Savage Beagle (nightclub), Longhorn (après Whistler), Merlins (après Blackcomb).
  • Music and theatre – Guitar Doug plays at many of the venues and is a great laugh. Most clubs have either DJs or live music. Maurice Young Millennium Place is Whistler’s gathering place for music concerts, festivals and plays.
  • Restaurants – Spaghetti Factory (good for families), Hy’s Steak House (5-star dining), Mongolie Grill, Tepan Village (great Japanese Food), Tandoori Grill (excellent Indian cuisine), Araxi.
  • Activities – Snowmobile tours (CAD $90-300 depending on what type of tour). We recommend the Canadian Snowmobile Adventures tour that takes you up to one of the restaurants and treat you to a fondue. New this year is a Tube Park. Slide down 1000 feet on an inflated rubber tube – choose from green to black diamond lanes.
  • Skiing – Free guided tours are available every day for every ability and meet at 11:15am at the top of Blackcomb’s Solar Coaster chairlift and at the Alpine LIghtboard at the top of Whistler’s Gondola.
  • Stay in Creeside. There are no ques and the run home is down the Dave Murray downhill. At the bottom is a great bar called "Dusty's". Great way to end a day.

Milestones (part of Delta Whistler) is very good value, also Blackcomb is located at bottom of the gondola. Blackcomb is generally less busy than Whistler.

Extreme Canadian offers steep sking clinics - brilliant and very good fun.

Whistler deserves to be held in such high esteem — it is a fabulous place and I was lucky enough to live there for a year. Beautiful in summer as well as winter, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied, try the bungee, the ziptrekking, heli-skiing or husky sledding — anything you can imagine you can do it here. Great ski school, apres to suit every taste, accommodation ranging from comfortable to superb 5*. Canadians are very welcoming, its easy to get to from Vancouver (also worth a day visit), and portions of nachos cannot be rivalled anywhere else!

    A Great Place o Ski 01/01/2012
Whistler-Blackcombe is an amazing ski area. I revel in the North American ski ethos of skiing all over the mountain with a huge variety of terrain. Starting with amazing alpine bowls which you can ski all over as opposed to the European style of skiing only on designated marked runs. There are also plenty of mogul runs which are fantastic fun, often in limited supply in Europe! Gladed runs are the best though skiing through the trees between runs, something I have not experienced in Europe and is great fun!! The ordered lift lines are also so much more relaxing han the frenetic scrums that you get in Europe. Ski school is also amazing especially for children and caters for all levels from beginners to level 1 ski instructors. Some great hotels and restaurants in the resort and incredible scenery when the sun shines!

Possibly the Best Ski Holiday Experience in the Word 22/04/2015
The danger with Whistler is that, if you are European skier, and really love skiing, you may never want to ski in Europe again. The scope of the inbounds (i.e. patrolled and avi controlled) off-piste is immense, in Europe you are, for the most part, either on-piste (patrolled and controlled) or off-piste and therefore at risk. Bowls, Couloir, trees and open snow fields: the off-piste options are fantastic, that is before you venture into the backcountry (where you are beyond the ski area boundary) or heli-ski (90% of the world’s heli-skiing is in BC). There is plenty of on-piste skiing also available (over 1000 acres and some of the world’s best terrain parks (Ride Catskinner over the XL park in the afternoon to see how it’s done). All this is spread over two cable car linked mountains with a big pedestrianized village at the base and a great variety of restaurants; Araxi and the Rim Rock at the top end to Splitz and the Spaghetti factory at the value end and many in between. The après is good, not quite Austria, but Merlin’s can rock, particularly on a Friday. There is also the Long Horn GLC, Dusty’s and the Dub Lihn Gate, which also has live music every evening. The shops are open late if you need some retail therapy after a hard day on the slopes. Night clubs: most resorts in Europe that I have been to have one or two, try five. With an average of 10 meters of snow per season (that is 30ft in old money) it can be epic, but not often sunny. The ski school is very good, all day for the kids in Adventure Camp and good group and private lessons available. If you think that you are too good for lessons, or want to get into the steeps, Extremely Canadian Clinics are the thing. Hint: the slope grading is rather means that slopes are a bit harder than you might encounter elsewhere.
