Ski Holidays in Kandersteg, Switzerland
The scenic village of Kandersteg is in a wide valley flanked by grand mountains. It is easily accessible, particularly by train, being on the main line through Switzerland and has connections to Germany, Belgium and Italy.
The two ski areas, Oeschinen and Sunnbühl, are both small, but very friendly and perfect for for beginners and intermediates, with wide, open pistes offering good visibility. The ski pass you need to have for skiing in Kandersteg is valid for both areas. A complimentary sport-bus provides convenient transportation.
Oeschinen is a lovely area based around a mountain lake. There are two cosy restaurants here and the downhill pistes range from easy to fairly difficult. The prepared pistes are 9 km in length and if nature provides too little snow there are snow machines to ensure continuous good skiing conditions. The Kandersteg ski school can be found here.
Delightful Sunnbühl is located at the southern end of the village, a ten minute walk from the Centre. At 2000 metres above sea level, Sunnbühl has easy to medium difficulty downhill pistes. The 6 km of prepared pistes is great for families, as the ski area is quiet and very good for beginners in downhill and snowboarding, with 2 training ski-lifts. For the more experienced, the piste from the plateau to the village is a black rated run. The cable car station is a picturesque restaurant where you can take lunch.
Activities in Kandersteg, Switzerland
Winter walking is also popular and the beautiful hike from Sunnbühl to the Gemmipass is well known and takes in the resort of Leukerbad (3 hours). Other activities include ice-fishing, an 800m toboggan run in the lower part of the ‘Oeschiwald’ which is lit at night, winter horse riding treks and 30m, 60m and 90m ski jumps. The resort is great value for money and ideal for families who want a holiday in the snow with an excellent atmosphere, and plenty of extra activities but where the skiing may not be the most important element.
