Ski Holidays in Kandersteg, Switzerland

The beautiful village of Kandersteg may not have the largest ski area but there is plenty on offer to keep families entertained – sleigh rides, toboggan runs, ice skating on the outdoor rink and snowshoeing. The mountaineering school holds ice-climbing courses and tours and the area is such a draw for ice climbers that there is even a festival in January.

There are a good variety of winter hiking trails and almost 60km of cross-country tracks including a 6km illuminated night trail. The uncrowded slopes with their wide pistes and beautiful views are ideal for Beginners and Families, a small selection of blue and red runs are spread across two areas which are linked by the free ski bus.

There is a special children’s area in the Oeschinen area. Every year the resort hosts a Belle Epoque week in late January, during which the village travels back in time 100 years and hosts a variety of sporting, cultural and social events to celebrate a century of tourism in the village.

The delightful Sunnbühl is located at the southern end of the village, a ten minute walk from the Centre. At 2000 metres above sea level, Sunnbühl has easy to medium difficulty downhill pistes. The 6 km of prepared pistes is great for families, as the ski area is quiet and very good for beginners in downhill and snowboarding, with 2 training ski-lifts. For the more experienced, the piste from the plateau to the village is a black rated run. The cable car station is a picturesque restaurant where you can take lunch.

Activities in Kandersteg, Switzerland

Winter walking is also popular and the beautiful hike from Sunnbühl to the Gemmipass is well known and takes in the resort of Leukerbad (3 hours). Other activities include ice-fishing, an 800m toboggan run in the lower part of the ‘Oeschiwald’ which is lit at night, winter horse riding treks and 30m, 60m and 90m ski jumps. The resort is great value for money and ideal for families who want a holiday in the snow with an excellent atmosphere, and plenty of extra activities but where the skiing may not be the most important element.
