Ski Holidays in Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt, Switzerland is a traditional resort with one of the most stunning backdrops of any resort (the Matterhorn) and has some of the finest skiing for intermediates and advanced. Zermatt is car free village, except for the electric carts, taxis and horse-drawn sleighs. It is charming, having a busy centre with a mixture of glitzy and everyday shops. The skiing in Zermatt is some of the best in Europe. Advanced skiers have plenty to keep them busy and if looking for a further challenge heliskiing is widely available. Intermediates are spoilt for choice in Zermatt with a variety of options, most notably a run down to Cervinia in Italy. The choice of eating on the mountain is phenomenal with more than thirty restaurants offering spectacular vistas and consistently high standards. Although Zermatt is more expensive than some resorts, the après ski is varied with an abundance of daytime activities for non skiers.

Moods Restaurant in the main 'Bahnhof Strasse' for fantastic, international cuisine and amazing decor. The Ice cave at the top of the Klein Matterhorn lift. Flu-alp Mountain restaurant from the Sunegga lift, the best food on the mountain, with a live band - regulars include Robbie Williams, Freda from Abba and Me!!!

For a romantic lunch with an uninterrupted view of the Matterhorn, check out Chez Vrony on the Sunnegga side, but be prepared to pay. If you're looking for a good late night, check out the Schneewitchen below the Paperla pub just over the river in town.

Surprisingly not expensive after buying the lift pass -ouch! Beers are around £2.50 for 500ml. 3 course dinners for 30 Swiss Francs or 2 courses 19 Swiss Francs in Potter's, a British pub which shows British sport via satalite. Coop and Migros have normal prices for self catering food. Mountain eating prices are even cheaper than rip-off British motorway restaurants! The Chalet Etoile on the Italian side of the mountains is wonderful for quality and cost - 19 Euros for lasagne, even cheaper beers. They accept Swiss Francs as well as euros. Use the lockers for boots and skis overnight at any of the lift stations - only 2 Swiss Francs for skis and the same for boots. You can then go shopping or go home in normal shoes. All the runs back into town are on snow covered narrow roads/tracks so not suitable for beginners. Swiss VAT is 7%, so shopping can be cheaper than prices at home. Smoking is still allowed in pubs and restaurants. You may want to take your own gin or whisky. Watch out for the acclaimed electric taxis - we called them stealth taxis as they silently push you off the edge of the road when they roll past.

An absolutely amazing resort, one of the prettiest Alpine towns we have visited, with excellent skiing. We stayed at Chalet Sunna which was very nice although the food could have been more plentiful. The transfer time of about 3 hours is acceptable for the end result! The snow while we were there was amazing, and all the pistes were immaculately groomed. I think that the gradings seemed a little on the easy side, a lot of the blacks should have been red, and reds blue etc so don’t be put off by the piste maps. If you do go take lunch up the hill, as the restaurants can be quite expensive. Despite this I think it is one place we definitely go back to! For an idea of what to expect our pictures are here.
