Chalet Chez Savoy, Val D'Isere

Built especially for us some years ago, Chez Savoy is in many ways the ideal chalet. Nothing too flash. No gold taps or heated loo seats.

The chalet is on four floors, with underfloor heating throughout. The boot warmer is on the ground floor, in the boot room shared with our adjoining Chalet La Moraine.

It is a local tradition to get planning permission for three floors and squeeze in a fourth. This may explain why although the top floor of Chez Savoy is perfectly high enough, you’ll knock yourself out on the low ceiling over the stairs. Or perhaps it’s the owner’s trademark: he also built Les Gnellets, next door, where you knock yourself out twice.

You can see the first-floor sitting room on our photos. It’s a good room, with its log fire and mural showing how the site once looked, and views up Solaise.

There are five comfortable bedrooms, one rather larger than the others, one slightly smaller, one with a double bed on a sort of platform, round the corner from an extra single bed that can be taken at half price (flight seats may be limited), and five decent bathrooms (three showers, two baths, three en-suite wcs, two extra wcs).

Chez Savoy’s position is excellent: in the little farming hamlet of Le Joseray, next to our chalets La Moraine and Les Gnellets, three minutes from the edge of the piste and Solaise cable car, six from the village centre.

Meals - Chalet Chez Savoy, Val D'Isere

We start with a proper breakfast. Fruit juice, porridge, Dorset cereals, bacon, eggs, baguettes straight from the famous local bakery, a croissant or pain au chocolat if you like, yogurts, British tea and fresh coffee from Italian espresso pots (with Nescafé and bizarre infusions for those who prefer them). A Cooked Breakfast option is also available.

You return from the slopes to find bread and jam, a freshly-baked cake, hot chocolate etc. left out for you.
Nightly canapés are followed by a three-course, fixed-menu, dinner-party-style meal. The cuisine is largely French, though with a fusion of other influences – what Londoners call Modern British. (Foreign, in other words.) With dinner, we serve free unlimited quantities of a selection of very drinkable French AOC wines and vins de pays.

Please note: The chalet host will have a day off during the course of the week, during which you will be required to eat out.
