Chalet La Petite Sassiere, Val D'Isere
The owners of this beautiful chalet very sensibly live in it over the summer. He is a refurbisher of chalets. She is a nag. Although the chalet is already perfect, she always makes him improve something. The comfy sofas in our picture have recently made way for smarter ones, and heaven knows what else will have changed by this winter! Whatever it is will be in good taste and old wood.
The sitting-dining room, with its log fire and open-plan kitchen, is great. It has TV (French), DVDs (British) and WiFi (global). Around this living room are three sweet, woody bedrooms with good bathrooms. They have low mezzanines with futons (well, mattresses) for a ninth adult or up to four children. Please note, however, that flight seats may be limited for extra beds on certain high season dates.
The entire top floor is taken up by the master bedroom. It is bigger than some whole chalets. The bed is vast (4m2!) and the bathroom has an echo. It has both a bath and a power-shower.
There is a veritable vista of the village and valley through the vast windows. As at Grande Sassière, next door, this view implies that the chalet is slightly above the valley floor (four minutes’ walk, to be precise). YSE guests don’t seem to do walking any more, so the two chalets share a Land Rover shuttle to run them to or from any point they wish in Val d’Isère between 8.30 and 10.30am, and from 3.30 to 8.00pm.

Meals - Chalet La Petite Sassiere, Val D'Isere
We start with a proper breakfast. Fruit juice, porridge, Dorset cereals, bacon, eggs, baguettes straight from the famous local bakery, a croissant or pain au chocolat if you like, yogurts, British tea and fresh coffee from Italian espresso pots (with Nescafé and bizarre infusions for those who prefer them). A Cooked Breakfast option is also available.
You return from the slopes to find bread and jam, a freshly-baked cake, hot chocolate etc. left out for you.
Nightly canapés are followed by a three-course, fixed-menu, dinner-party-style meal. The cuisine is largely French, though with a fusion of other influences – what Londoners call Modern British. (Foreign, in other words.) With dinner, we serve free unlimited quantities of a selection of very drinkable French AOC wines and vins de pays.
Please Note: For all parties booking, we levy a damage deposit of £1,000. This is payable by credit card prior to departure, and refunded after the end of the holiday upon satisfactory inspection of the chalet.
