The most sumptuous four-bedroom, four bathroom chalet in Val d'Isère, in the most perfect location, Chalet Pic Noir is going to satisfy even the most discerning of skiers and non-skiers.
Pic Noir, Perdrix and Ptarmigan are adjacent apartments occupying the whole third floor of the brand-new Résidence du Savoie in the village centre. The architect is Michel Covarel, who has pretty much single-handedly transformed Val d'Isère into the elegant resort it has become. Apartments in this building are on the market at 30,000€ per square metre, which is apparently the highest price ever asked in Val d'Isère. That the estate agents rate it so highly must mean something. Our interior photographs don't show Chalet Pic Noir, which is being completed as we write, but another Covarel chalet recently completed in a similar style. Pic Noir will be full of old wood and old stone, and a delight to stay in.
The four bedrooms aren't huge, but they're beautifully fitted and finished, all with the option of two good-sized single beds or a huge double. There's even a sauna. The bathrooms (one bath, three showers) are, er, sumptuous, with showers you can drown in. Bedroom four is a perfect twin or double but without an outside window. We are the sort of hearty countryfolk who like to throw the window open when we go to bed, and would die of claustrophobia if we couldn't hear the neighbour's cockerel at 5am, so we are offering this as a single room, with no supplement! And if you do want to bring someone else, they pay just half price. Most of us could sleep without a proper window for £1000, and if you live in a city and tend to sleep with the windows shut anyway, you may think that we are being generous to the point of insanity.
The sitting-dining room is spectacular. Not just the granite and old timber, the good lighting, the bottomless sofas and roaring log fire, but a massive balcony with the most amazing views from La Daille to Solaise, from the main street to the Face de Charvet. Working on the theory that they can't describe a chalet to you until they have stayed in it themselves, our Sherborne team are desperate to spend a week enjoying this superb living room.
And can the position really be described as 'the most perfect location'? Well, if you remember the old Perdrix Blanche restaurant, or the new Fondue Factory, Chalet Pic Noir is literally on top of them. Smack in the middle of the main street, yards from the ski buses, a few paces from all of the shops, restaurants, bars, pharmacies, physios and anything else one may want after a day on the world's best slopes. We did wonder if we'd hear noise from the street, but having checked it out we can assure you hand on heart that the soundproofing is so good that when the balcony doors are shut, the loudest sound is the crackling of the logs in the hearth.
There is probably nowhere better in Val d'Isère for seven or eight people...
