A very enjoyable week. - 09/02/2015
Overall

I have been skiing for nearly 40 years and always considered Alpbach to be too small a ski area however as I am now getting older, take the skiing in a little more sedate manner and the fact that the area has recently opened up a little I decided to give it a go. The skiing was good with just about enough for an experienced skier to not get bored over the course of a week. We had a mixed week weather wise and were lucky to have great snow. After a new fall there is quite a lot of off piste potential close to the pistes. The area links up well. We found out that our week was a German holiday week however, queues at lifts were almost not existent and the slopes were not overcrowded, this is probably due to the fact that there are a limited number of beds in the linked villages. A bus is required from Alpbach to one of two starting points for the ski are via Gondolas however buses were regular and never that overcrowded. There are a selection of mountain restaurants mainly at the summits, the midway stations and bases, they were pleasant but not many had the old Austrian mountain character. The village of Alpbach is pretty and is quiet with a few bars and some reasonably priced restaurants if you are not on half board. We had a special offer on our holiday at the Hotel Alpbacherhof which turned out to be fantastic value for money. The hotel is very comfortable with a great spa and the food is tremendous. The staff are also wonderful. It is a two minute walk to the bus stop.

Apres Ski: 3/5
Accommodation & Value: 5/5
