6 things to do and see on a ski holiday in Kitzbuhel

Often regarded as a ‘glitzy’ ski resort, Kitzbuhel is a beautiful and traditional styled town with a brilliant ski area and some of the best lift infrastructure in the world. The après isn’t as crazy as other Austrian ski resorts like St Anton or Mayrhofen but there are a large range of umbrella bars and huts on the mountain to tickle your taste buds before returning to town for après and evening drinks at one of the resort’s legendary bars.

Kitzbuhel is most famous for the iconic Hahnenkamm ski race that takes place in January. It’s the best weekend of the year and the resort comes to life as visitors from all over Europe and celebrities come into Kitzbuhel to experience the amazing skiing and weekend of parties. There is a range of accommodation options from the great value Hotel Aurach located outside of the main town through to a range of 4 and 5 star hotels in the centre of town.

1. Check out the Hahnenkamm route

The Strief is the most iconic ski run in the World and the Hahnenkamm downhill is the most famous race in the circuit. People come from all over the world to Kitzbuhel each winter to view this iconic event and watch the best skiers in the world tackle this great run. Non-professional skiers and snowboarders won’t be able to attempt the exact route, but if you take the Red 21 back down towards town you will weave in and out of the main slope that the experts attack during the competition.

2. See the spectacular 360 views at Panorama Alm restaurant

If you are venturing over the 3S gondola and on to the Pass Thurn side of the ski area, Panorama Alm is the perfect lunch stop, located on the Zweitausender. It is a self-service restaurant with a large indoor and outdoor area. In good weather, they may even open the BBQ area on the large sun terrace. To reach the restaurant from Kitzbuhel take the 3S gondola and the two 6 seater chairlifts Bärenbad I and II.

3. Unwind at the Aquarena

After your fun day on the slopes head to the Aquarena Kitzbuhel swimming centre for an evening of relaxation, pampering or fun with the friends and family. The Aquarena is located just 5 minute walk from the Hahnenkamm gondola on the outside of the main Kitzbuhel centre. The complex features a large leisure area with waterfall, a 25m sports pool, adventure slides, children’s pool area, sauna, steam rooms and a restaurant that is accessible with entering the pool areas. The centre is open until 9 pm during the winter season.

4. Apres at The Londoner

Open for après every day from 4pm until late, The Londoner is the liveliest bar in town and features regular live music. Other bars for good après include Flannigans Irish Pub, Pavilion and Jimmy’s.

5. Explore the ski routes in Kitzbuhel

If there’s fresh snow but you are cautious about going off-piste then Kitzbuhel has numerous Ski routes which are marked and monitored ski runs but are unpisted so they keep all the fresh snow which feels like off-piste. There are 11 routes across the ski area. The entire Kitzbuhel ski area has a total of 209 km with a huge range of pistes for all levels of skiers and snowboarders to enjoy. The ski lifts are extremely modern, there is even 10 chairlifts with heated seats!

6. Ski the Kitzbuhel Horn

One morning or afternoon, take the bus (either from town or the Hahnenkamm gondola) to the Kitzbuhel Horn. Even though there is only a hand full of runs over here, it is often quieter and there is a range of slopes for all abilities. Beginners will enjoy getting to know the sport on the main central blue run and experienced skiers can tackle the snow park or venture down the various red runs and revel in the lovely snow conditions at 2000 m. Red run 4 down to Raintal is really good, especially with fresh snow, it’s just a big shame the chairlift back up is one of the oldest lifts in resort and is very slow otherwise I’d happily lap this run all afternoon.

Non-skiers can enjoy the sunshine and beautiful views from the restaurant at the top of the gondola. Blue run 3 is a lovely and long blue run through the trees back down to the base of the mountain (there is also a stop and the gondola mid-station if you change your mind and wish to take the gondola down).
