Make the most out of your skiing holiday and combine the mountains with an urban or beach retreat. It’s a perfect way to keep all members of the group happy, and with many cities just a stone’s throw away from ski resorts, it makes perfect sense!
Here’s our top 5 city and ski breaks to give you some inspiration to try something new and maximise your holiday experience.
1. Vancouver & Whistler, Canada
Whistler is Canada’s largest resort and is open from November until June, proving to be popular in both the early and late season. Vancouver is just a 2-hour drive away from Whistler and the transfer routes are very scenic. You can add 2 or 3 days extra to explore the city centre with beautiful mountains as its backdrop. Why not explore one of the world’s most liveable cities. Walk down Lions Gate Bridge; take in the views of Vancouver and the North Shore mountains at the harbour front or visit the city’s most famous food market on Granville Island.
2. Oslo, Norway
Oslo is the most accessible winter sports destination with just a 20-minute journey on the metro system from Oslo city to Olso Winterpark. Winterpark offers 40kms of downhill terrain, cross country skiing and snow park is known for attracting top freestyle talent. It’s a great way to experience Norway as although its resort is compact, combining it with a city break more than makes up for this. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the city’s fjords, museums, cathedrals and vibrant music scene in the day and get some skiing in at night.

3. Salzburg & Tirol, Austria
Salzburg is the entry airport into Tirol’s resorts including Kitzbuhel, Westendorf, Ellmau, Soll and Niderau with smaller resorts suitable for beginners also close to the city. Not only does Salzburg have beautiful views with the mountains as its background, but the city’s idyllic setting has loads to do in the winter: markets squares, Salzburg museum, cathedrals, Hohensalzburg fortress and it’s the birthplace of Mozart.

4. Nice & Isola 2000, France
A ski and city break to Isola 2000 and Nice provides complete contrasts of sand and snow in one holiday. The transfer between the two is just under an hour by car, going from a charming old town with beaches and markets in the Côte d’Azur to the snow-sure and sunny resort of Isola 2000. Isola 2000 is also at an advantage as it isn’t a well-known French ski resort compared to the likes of Val d’isere and as it’s close to the coast it has great snow conditions throughout the season. Isola also has 120km of slopes at a high altitude with an additional 130km of terrain in Auron which is covered by the full area lift pass.
5. Granada & Sierra Nevada, Spain
Combining Granada and Sierra Nevada is a great way to have a balanced holiday. Near the Costa del Sol, Granada is just a 30-minute journey to Sierra Nevada and from 3,100 metres you can even see the Mediterranean Sea. Sierra Nevada is also Europe’s sunniest resort, bringing the best of both worlds with sunny warm and cold climates. In Granada you can learn about the historic city, see the sites of Alhambra Palace and even go to a nighttime tapas tour – seems logical when visiting Spain!
