Best Après-Ski Bars and Nightlife Hotspots in Morzine

Best Après-Ski Bars and Nightlife Hotspots in Morzine

Morzine is part of France’s second-largest ski area, the Portes du Soleil, and provides quick access to about 650km of pistes - although not all are connected.

It’s a hugely popular ski area, and Morzine is definitely the main party town for it. Once a proper farming and mining town before its skiing days, there’s a huge range of options for bars and clubs, as well as other activities and restaurants.

If you’d prefer a more peaceful experience in the Portes du Soleil, try neighbouring Avoriaz or Châtel, which are nowhere near as big as Morzine.

Keep reading for our top picks - and remember that there’ll be lots more to discover in Morzine that we didn’t have space for.

Best bars for mountain partying

  • La Folie Douce
  • Happy Hours
  • L'Passage

If you’re after a party atmosphere every day, then head up to La Folie Douce, which is up in neighbouring Avoriaz.

Yes - we just said Avoriaz is quieter than Morzine… this bar is the exception.

Expect singers and dancers, with skiers jumping up onto the tables and performers walking round the crowd getting involved. There’s lots of live music and DJs too.

It’s found on the slope that runs into Avoriaz town. To get there from Morzine, take the Prodains cable car up. You can take it back down afterwards, or simply ski down - don’t forget, there’s a short (and free) bus transfer to get between the bottom of Prodains and Morzine.

Meanwhile, for a daily party with less French flamboyance, aim for Happy Hours, which is at the bottom of the Parchets blue run and Ardent gondola. It’s fairly chill for a bit, then gradually morphs into a mixture of drum & bass, UK garage and house music. It stays open until 8pm daily, and by the end it’s pretty chaotic!

If you want a particular day to go, then bear in mind that Wednesdays are when they go full force. It’s a well-known hardcore party on that day - some say the best in the Alps!

If you’re in good time then take the Ardent gondola back up, while if if you stay past the lift closure times, the ‘M line’ bus back to Morzine runs until 6pm, while Happy Hours themselves also put on a free shuttle back to Morzine on Wednesdays to ensure nobody gets left behind.

A third - and much more lowkey - option is L’Passage. It’s a cosy chalet just underneath the Super Morzine gondola that puts on simple but tasty food during the day, before things get a bit livelier at 3pm with music and DJs sometimes popping up. It’s not got Folie Douce energy, although this might be a good thing for those wanting something a bit more relaxed.

It has some of the best views in the Portes du Soleil, and you can catch the gondola back down once things wrap up.

 Best bars for live music

  • Le Tremplin
  • The Cavern
  • Dixie Bar

Probably the most well-known of all Morzine’s après bars, Le Tremplin (pictured at top) is found at the bottom of the Pleney slopes and welcomes huge numbers of skiers and snowboarders who are ready for a dance after a long day.

But for it being at the bottom of the slopes, it could easily slot into the section above. There’s a live band or DJ playing every day, with very lively areas near this, but also plenty of space to be able to chat a distance away from the music, while still enjoying it.

Since it isn’t up the mountain, it remains open until late, with lots of people enjoying themselves so much they lose track of the time.

The Cavern, meanwhile, is the premier venue for a genuine focus on live music. During the ski season, there are 2 live acts every single day (one at 5pm and another at 10pm) which make it a really popular venue.

It’s also generally got great energy throughout the entire evening, with people welcome until 2am. There’s even 7 tables that have private beer pumps!

There’s also Dixie Bar, which is an Irish bar that has regular live music, with the details of when and who changing on a fairly regular basis. Go in and ask them at the start of your holiday to know which days to aim for.

One thing that doesn’t change, though, is the appearance of the Dixie Micks band, which you’ll often find playing Irish folk music that really gets the place going.

More bars for keeping the night going

  • Tibetan Cafe
  • Coyote Bar

Almost next door to each other close to the Pleney lift, both Tibetan Cafe and Coyote Bar are lively places with plenty of DJ sets, music, dancing, and lots of pints. Both also have pool tables.

The music differs slightly, with the Tibetan Cafe with much more of a rock’n’roll focus, while Coyote has a good amount of garage, drum & bass, and jungle.

Best nightclubs for partying 'til the early hours

  • L'Opera

This is definitely Morzine’s biggest club and a very well-known name in the area.

It’s one for serious late nights - doors don’t open until 1am (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays) and things wrap up at 5am every day.

The music here can be quite mixed, with techno, house, electro, Latin and D&B among the most played.

It also welcomes some international DJs, while fancy dress is encouraged.

Best bar for watching live sport

  • Dixie Bar

It made our pick for live music, and this Irish bar is also a top shout for catching all the action with its various big screens.

That being said, there will be plenty more bars to be able to watch sport in.

Best bar for craft beer

  • Bec Jaune Brewery

If you like a fancy beer then head to this special microbrewery that has plenty of homemade beers with lots of lovely food to go with it, including burgers, ramen, don buri and much more.

You can find it on the same road (Route de la Combe À Zore) as Cavern Bar and many other Morzine nightlife institutions.

Best bars for something a bit more relaxed

  • Bar Robinson
  • Coup de Coeur

Bar Robinson is a very popular après bar which has been in Morzine since 1926. It sells just Mützig lager on tap (plus the usual wines, spirits etc) but does some lovely comfort food, too, like burgers, sandwiches and chips. We’ve included it in this section as they don’t put on loud music - meaning you’ll be able to clearly hear your friends and family when talking to them.

Coup de Coeur, meanwhile, is a gourmet restaurant with a wine bar attached. It stocks some amazing wines from the local areas. You can sit indoors, or on the outdoor heated terrace, and treat yourself to some tapas - with sharing platters including cheeses, soups, cold meat, oysters and more.
