1. St Anton

Austria’s reputable resort for advanced and off piste skiing. St Anton is part of the linked Arlberg ski area with Lech, Oberlech, Zurs, Zug, St Christoph, Stuben, Warth-Schrocken and Sonnenkopf, forming over 305km of pistes and 200km of off piste terrain. It is known for its abundance of powdery snow and raucous après ski and nightlife with its Krazy Kangaruh bar and the Mooserwirt being the notorious spots for these antics. Beside the après, St Anton is a beautifully Tyrolean resort. Walk along its pedestrianized main street and you’ll feel the liveliness of the shops and bars that stretch all the way along the street.

2. Mayrhofen

Another Austrian resort for the party goers, Mayrhofen is situated in the upper Ziller Valley, part of the Zillertal ski area, and is a firm favourite amongst Brits due to its authentic feel. It has still retained its traditional character despite this and is nestled on the floor of the valley. It offers an extensive array of slopes that cover two areas, directly accessed by two lifts on its main street. The smaller area is Ahorn and the major area is the Penken which both cater excellently for novices all the way to experienced skiers and snowboarders. Visitors can also take advantage of the nearby Hintertux Glacier at the head of the valley as part of the Zillertal Superski group of resorts, covered under the full area lift pass. Mayrhofen also hosts the Snowbombing festival each April which is Europe’s largest hosted during the ski season.

3. Ischgl

The perfect concoction of parties and pistes, Ischgl is arguably the party capital of Austria and offers snow sure north facing slopes at high altitudes for quality snow conditions. Its ski area is the largest in the Eastern Alps, unlocking 239km of slopes that also link to Samnaun over the Swiss border. The resort has some of the best and efficient lift systems in the world, all modern and fast, to ensure you get the most out of its runs. The resort village is relatively small with plenty of bars and clubs continuing the party way into the night. It also hosts a number of events such as the Top of the Mountain concerts which has previously features artists such as Elton John, Robbie Williams and Rihanna.

4. Kitzbuhel

Kitzbuhel is largely known for its brutal Hanenkamm or ‘Streif’ downhill race, the most demanding test of determination for top alpine athletes and the most famous ski race in the world. But the resort isn’t just for world class skiers. Kitzbuhel offers 230km of slopes for all recreational skiing abilities. The area also has a wealth of off piste trails and opportunities to explore the more areas under the Kitzalps Allstar lift pass which covers 10 areas such as the SkiWelt resorts, Zell am See and Kaprun and also Alpbach and Wildschonau. The luxurious village is also a hub for shopping, hosting an array of exclusive boutiques as well as fine restaurants and sophisticated bars and clubs.

5. Saalbach

Saalbach forms part of the second largest ski area in Austria, the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, with Hinterglemm, Fieberbrunn and Leogang. It is very popular amongst skiers and snowboarders with efficient lift systems and offers 270km of diverse slopes for all abilities. Off the slopes it has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere with the resort centre clustered with traditional buildings, a domed church and river as well as a traffic free main street.
