Vonn plays it safe in Are slalom

Vonn plays it safe in Are slalom Her own safety was the top concern of Lindsey Vonn as she settled for an eighth-place finish in the World Cup slalom event at Are in Sweden on Saturday (December 13th).

Vonn had already made a mistake when failing to finish in the giant slalom and was just intent on salvaging some points from the trip in the second, more technical event.

She told the Associated Press: "I was more trying to just finish. It was pretty dangerous with the condition on the course.

"It was hard to see exactly where the snow was good and where it was bad. So I think I skied a bit too conservatively in the really foggy sections. But, oh well."

The combined results saw the American fall to second in the overall standings, 20 points behind Maria Riesch, after the German took second behind Sandrine Aubert in the slalom.

However, she will quickly gain the opportunity to reclaim her position at the head of the standings as her more preferred speed events fill the criteria for the next calendar stop at Val D'Isere.

Vonn became the overall world champion in both 2008 and 2009 to become the first American to achieve successive titles.
