TOMAMU, JAPAN
Ski holidays in Tomamu, Japan
A smaller resort than some, but a great option for beginners and well-seasoned skiers alike. In the middle of Hokkaido, Tomasu offers amazing powder skiing and tree-lined pistes.
The resort itself is purpose-built for skiing, so there is no traditional village, but rather key spots around the mountain. There’s the central hub, with a food court and shops; the ski-through Hotalu Street is a great spot for lunch; and if you fancy a dip in the pool or a visit to an open-air onsen, Mina-Mina Beach is the place to go.
And Tomamu isn’t just great for skiing - there are a whole host of non-ski activities, including the unmissable Ice Village.

Skiing in Tomamu
With 21.5km of pistes covering two peaks linked at the base, navigation is fairly easy in Tomamu, meaning you can just enjoy the skiing. The views from the top of Mt. Tomamu are incredible, and there are plenty of ungroomed advanced runs for that perfect powder skiing.
The Hello Nipo piste is perfect for those just starting out. And once you’ve got the hang of things on this wide, gentle slope, head up the Tower Express chairlift to explore some of the green slopes. Japan experiences a lot of snow in January and February, so a visit outside of these months can make it a bit easier to learn.
Most chairlifts to right to the top, which makes for great, uninterrupted runs for intermediate & advanced skiers and boarders. Whilst most of the runs are intermediate-friendly, all the black runs are left ungroomed for you to experience Japan’s world-class powder. And there’s a designated off-piste area for experts only, which requires a short hike (and registration on an app) but promises some incredible tree runs.
Japan’s powder is popular with snowboarders, and the linked-up runs mean less time strapping in, and more time carving. There’s a great snow park here, with designated lanes for different abilities.
Snow conditions in Tomamu
Tomamu usually opens from December to April, with January and February being the heaviest months for snow. Japan’s world-famous powder offers completely different ski conditions to the snow in Europe, and metres of snow can fall overnight. In March and April, you’ll start to experience some more bluebird days - great for beginners.
Apres-ski, restaurants and other activities in Tomamu
If you are in search of a laid-back apres style, Tomamu may be the place for you. Whilst there are still some bars for that post-ski drink (make sure you check out the Ice Bar!), along with the resort’s many restaurants, you won’t find all-night parties here.
Tomamu has around 20 restaurants, offering a range of cuisine from traditional Japanese meals, to familiar Western favourites. Booking ahead is advisable!
And when you’re looking for other activities, Tomamu really was built with ‘something for everyone’ in mind. Other apres activities include:
Ice fishing
Outdoor ice skating
Snow tubing
Snowmobiling / skidooing
Snowshoe walking
Ice village
Sledding park
Snow buggy tour
