Zermatt - the village without cars The picturesque mountain village at the foot of the Matterhorn has become one of the most important Summer and Winter holiday destinations. Zermatt is car-free - no motor vehicles are not permitted. Horse-drawn sleighs and carriages, electric vehicles and bicycles are the only mode of transport allowed. This makes Zermatt an ideal place for relaxing and peaceful holidays. Location Zermatt is at an altitude of 1600m. It is located at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Valais Alps, in the South of Switzerland. Travel from Visp through the Visper-Valley, on which end you’ll find Zermatt. In the mountains of Zermatt you will find 38 of the 76 european "four thousanders". The skiing area stretches from Theodol-Col (3300m) and Testa Grigia (3480m) to Cervinia in Italy.
