Southern Hemisphere Ski Season Opens

Southern Hemisphere Ski Season Opens

This week is the start of the Southern Hemisphere ski season. The Resort of El Colardo, part of Chile's Three Valleys, was the first to open on Thursday, with the linked resorts of La Parva and Valle Nevado expected to follow shortly.

In the last seven days the resort has received 54cm of snow and is expect mostly dry conditions for the opening week. The resort is hoping to open the Pinguino, León, La Liebre, Cornisa, Cono Este and La Copa lifts over the next few days as the season kicks into gear.

After good early season snow and sufficient snow-making facilities Coronet Peak, on New Zealand's south island, is due to open tomorrow. Though the conditions are looking good for June the lower slopes will only offer limited skiing. “We will open with the Coronet Express Quad and the brand new Meadows Express Quad providing access to the M1, Million Dollar, Wall Street, Shirtfront and Big Easy” commented Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie.

The nearby resort of Mt Hutt is due to open next weekend, 12th June, with one of New Zealand's largest ski areas on The Remarkables is due to open later this month, 19th June, and finally Treblecone is due to open 24th June.
