As the title may suggest, it is snowing again this weekend. After last year's sparse snow, the snow gods have returned to full effect this winter.
This weekend will see another big bump, with many European resorts receiving around 50cm of snow by Monday, most of which appears to be falling today and tomorrow. The biggest overall snowfall for one resort is once again Canada's Whistler, but as a general rule the best snow this weekend appears to be in France and Switzerland. Though there is also plenty of white stuff arriving in Austria and Italy.
The Haute-Savoie, near to the Swiss and Italian borders is benefitting the most from the current storm. The Portes Du Soleil continues with its fine from this winter with another weekend of incredible snow. The forecast for today alone is 56cm Avoriaz, 55cm in Morzine, 53cm in Les Gets and 51cm in Chatel, with 74cm in Morzine and Avoriaz, 71cm in Les Gets and 70cm in Chatel falling in total. The nearby resorts of Flaine and Megeve are also set for some serious pow, with 75cm and 70cm respectively. Further afield and Argentiere should see 57cm of fresh snow and Chamonix should gain another 48cm of the white stuff.
Heading to British skiers' most popular region, France's Tarantaise Valley, and the snow continues to look good. Les Arcs and La Plagne are due the heaviest snowfall in the region over the weekend, with a very pleasant 36cm and 32cm respectively. The Three Valleys is also gaining some decent snow with 32cm forecast in Courchevel, 27cm forecast in Meribel and 20cm in Val Thorens. Never ones to miss out on the snow party, Val d'Isere is due around 24cm of fresh snow, with around 27cm in Tignes. As a whole there is around 20cm falling in most of these resorts today alone.
Switzerland is also in for some pretty epic conditions over the coming days with the current storm dumping powder across the country. Flims Laax, which is usually associated with freestyle skiing and boarding as the home of the Burton European Open and The Brits, is expecting around 46cm, of snow today, with 69cm over the weekend. Davos and Klosters are set for around a 60cm covering of powder, while Villars should see around 62cm of snow. The off-piste Meccas of Engelberg and Verbier are forecast 53cm and 50cm respectively, while the luxury resort of St. Moritz and Zermatt are expecting 36cm and 24cm respectively.
Austria is continuing to hide under a layer of snow as the storm continues to share the love. St. Anton should benefit from around 34cm today and 55cm by the beginning of next week, with Ischgl expecting almost identical snow of 35cm today and 56cm by Monday. Lech is ensuring its luxury hotels and high-flying guests will enjoy the best conditions, with 41cm falling today and 68cm in total, while the party town of Mayrhofen should enjoy around half metre of powder over the weekend.
Italy is also begging to get into the swing of things, with 30cm forecast in Selva, 25cm set for Arabba and around 29cm in Cervinia.
With all of this snow falling on an already huge base in the Alps, the conditions are continuing to be epic. If the off-piste base continues to pack down and the snow keeps on falling, the mountains are going to offer amazing riding in every possible way, with perfect pistes and pockets of powder to play with days after the last fall. All I need to do now is find the right ski deal to get myself back to my spiritual home — I wonder if the boss will give me a week off soon.
