Snow report | 19 Dec 2016: It’s snowing

Snow report | 19 Dec 2016: It’s snowing Snow is finally back! This is brilliant news for skiers and snowboarders departing for Christmas and New Year in the mountains. It’s been a quiet month on the snow front with many resorts relying on the early season snow and snow-making to ensure the slopes are in top condition. Last night the snow started falling across the Alps, many resorts have received a few cms of snowfall with larger dumps in localised areas.

Despite the lack of snow, high altitude ski areas have still been able to offer great skiing thanks to the resort’s brilliant slope maintenance teams. We’ve had members of the Iglu Ski team out and about in the mountains checking out the start of season conditions in many of our top selling ski resorts. They’ve returned with very positive feedback about the on piste conditions in Tignes, Val d’Isere, Cervinia, Les 2 Alpes and Sierra Nevada.

St Anton, Austria

Very pleasantly surprised by the good piste snow. Definitely needs snow though as there is none in the resort centre and the snow cannons are having to work hard. That said, the runs below the “snow line” are holding up fine so again the pisteurs are doing a good job so that you can actually ski down all the way to resort without too much of a difference in snow conditions.

Higher up the conditions were great! Blue sky in every direction and good firm snow topped up by the snow cannons. Did not make it beyond the St Anton or St Christoph ski areas as we were tight for time, but genuinely a good ski with the biggest inconvenience being flat line on runs not in the sun, but even then that was minor.

Sierra Nevada, Spain

The snow conditions remain excellent from the top of the Borreguil with 150cm snow base, and you could even ski back down into resort before the recent snowfall!

The Laguna area has seen some of the best of the snow and beginners and intermediates have no shortage of options with long wide pistes all over the mountain, whilst more advanced skiers can now enjoy some powder off-piste. With 70km of pisted terrain open there are more than enough runs to explore for a 3 or 4 night getaway.

Sierra Nevada snow report

Tignes and Val d'Isere, France

The on piste conditions are fantastic. The runs are well maintained and about 90% of the whole Espace Killy area is open. Off piste isn’t currently available as it's all tracked out, hard and crunchy. The park in Val d'Isere is open with a choice of beginner intermediate and advanced lines with jumps, boxes and rails.

Les 2 Alpes, France

Les Deux Alpes was fantastic for early December. I can see why it's so popular for people looking for snow sure resorts, especially with the varied terrain high up on the glacier. It really suited our group that ranged from beginners to advance skiers/boarders. The après was awesome as well. Such a fun and lively town!

Isola 2000, France

Great ski day due to pleasant surprise of great snow on the pistes and blue skies. No fresh snow but the pisteurs have managed the large snowfall from early season really well. That alongside snow cannons means the piste conditions were genuinely perfect. Only once all day did I momentarily come across any ice. Equally there was no slush as many of Isola’s slopes sit on the north facing side of the valley and so don’t actually get much direct sunlight. Even on the “sunny” side it was fine as there were so few people that it isn’t cut up at all.
