Channel Tunnel owner calls for more trains to Germany and Switzerland
Amid plans to boost the capacity of London St Pancras station, the owners of the tunnel and tracks on either side, have urged “new and existing train operators” to establish new routes out into Europe.
Getlink has set a target of 5,000 passengers crossing the Channel Tunnel per hour, which would mark a huge increase - capacity is currently at 1,800.
Geneva and Zurich are among the new hoped-for destinations for services straight from London. Both are key transit hubs for plenty of Swiss and French ski resorts, including in the Portes du Soleil and Grand Massif.
It would mark a major step forward in decarbonising ski holidays, with train travel producing far less carbon pollution than flights.
