What is December skiing like?
December can be an excellent time to go skiing. The highest ski resorts in the Alps, including Tignes, Val d'Isere, Val Thorens, Ischgl, and Obergurgl, open at the end of November.
During the first two weeks of December, the pistes in these resorts are gloriously quiet, and you can take advantage of quiet mountain restaurants, while bars in resort have a tamer atmosphere than what you'd expect in peak season.
Of course, as soon as Christmas comes around, you can expect resorts to fill up with families and those looking to do something different for the holidays. Pistes tend to get busier, however, head to a resort with a modern, efficient, and fast lift system, and you'll find queues remain minimal once everyone has dispersed across the mountain.
Christmas and New Year in the mountains really is magical, with parades, fireworks, Father Christmas meet and greets, and plenty of vin chaud (mulled wine) and hot chocolate to go around.
