We went for a short break (4 nights in 1st week of Jan) as a taster of Austria as we usually go to the French Alps.
The hotel was fairly basic but clean which we were perfectly happy with given the price of our holiday, and had a Sauna which was a welcome bonus at the end of the day.
The food was all freshly cooked for the evening meal, breakfast was slightly more basic but again overall good and staff were helpful.
The location of the hotel was good and Zell itself was a proper village rather that a purpose built resort so had more variety than we were used to in terms of shops and bars. However we felt the legendary Austrian apres-ski was not up to much - maybe it was the week we went!
In terms of snowboarding we spent one day in Zell which had pretty tree lined runs but was quite busy on the blues/ reds and as a lower resort was suffering from lack of fresh snow. The following two days we got the free bus over to Kitzsteinhorn (approx 20 mins and on the same lift pass) which has a different feel as a large open bowl on a glacier. This provided us with good park and cruising pistes suited to both our abilities. Again it could be a bit busy on the easier reds and blues but I understand that early January is popular as it is a Russian holiday. Be sure to leave time to get up and down the glacier as it is two gondolas to base of pistes from bus stop. The two linked resorts have very different feels and we felt were cheaper than comparable resorts in France.
Overall a great mini snow holiday and a good taster of Austria!
