Wrap up for a winter wander around the frozen lake.
This peaceful pick in the Alpbach valley will fit the bill if you like a leisurely ski holiday. A handful of quiet pistes wind their way down the slopes above the village, and the top-notch kids’ area by the gondola is just the ticket if you’re here with little ones. The wider Ski Juwel area is a 15-minute bus ride away, but once you’re there, you’ve got a week's worth of skiing on 113km of scenic, wooded runs.
Reith itself has postcard looks – a traditional village built around a little lake with views of pines and peaks everywhere you look. An onion-domed church stands at the centre and the streets are lined with local shops and family-run restaurants. Après here is pretty low-key, so settle in for leisurely dinners capped off with a quiet nightcap in your hotel bar.
For a different kind of winter fun, spend an afternoon riding Reith’s toboggan run. Hire your traditional wooden sledge from the local sports shop, then take the Reitherkogelbahn gondola for a scenic 15-minute slide back to the bottom.

Skiing in Reith im Alpbachtal,
Reith’s got a handful of runs on its local mountain, including a top-notch kid’s area, but most of the slopes are a bus ride away in the main 109km Ski Juwel area. Terrain-wise, the pistes are wide and tree-lined – spot on if you’re skiing with kids or keen to perfect your parallel.
- Beginners
Ski school is in nearby Alpbach, so you’ll need to hop on the free ski bus before making those first turns. Once you’re there, you’ve got wide nursery slopes to get you going and easy runs on the Gmahkopf peak a lift ride away.
- Intermediates
Find your rhythm on the red above the village, then bus your way over to the main part of the ski area for more easy-going intermediate terrain. Most of the runs wind through trees into the valley, and there are some longer descents if you’re eager to work the thighs – the 7km-long piste to the village of Auffach is our fave.
- Advanced
Experienced skiers will want to make tracks straight to the main Ski Juwel area. Once you’re here, the blacks below the Hornbahn chair are you best bet for the steepest terrain – link them up with the un-pisted powder run down to Inneralpbach for a truly leg-testing descent.
- Snowboarding
Some of the best terrain for boarders is a bus ride away on the Gmahkopf peak. Find your flow on boxes and kickers in the Snowpark Alpbachtal, or try the beginner-friendly features on the fun slope next door if you’re a freestyle first-timer. Away from the bumps and jumps, you’ve got lots of wide, smooth pistes – ideal for practising the basics.

Reith is very quiet in the evening, so expect leisurely drinks in hotel bars raher then late nights spent hopping between pubs and clubs.
