Skiing in Drei Zinnen
The 115km Drei Zinnen ski area is spread around a handful of small villages, each connected by a ski bus. Sesto is home to the best nursery slopes, and once you’re ready to progress, there are plenty of gentle, tree-lined runs to explore. Confident skiers can take in the beautiful Dolomite scenery on the Giro Delle Cime ski circuit, and even tick off Italy’s steepest piste – the Holzriese.
Beginners
Each town and village has its own nursery area, so you won’t have to go far for ski school no matter where you’re staying. There’s a range of short blue runs around Sesto and Waldheim, a greta option to get those ski legs working again. When you're ready take the lifts a bit higher to build up your confidence on longer runs, like Blue 19a above San Candido or Blue 3 from the Rotwand peak.
Intermediates
Drei Zinnen has a plentful supply of intermediate runs, favourites include the top-to-bottom reds on Monte Elmo and the more relaxed, tree-lined blues on the Baranci peak. A real highlight is the Giro delle Cime circuit to cover 34km of the best runs across all five mountains – all backed by beautiful views of the majestic Dolomites views. If you've got the time and energy take the Ski Pustertal Express train from any of the towns to Kronplatz for another 100km of piste.
Advanced
Advanced skiers will also enjoy the Giro delle Cime, but if you like a challenge, take on the Holzriese 2 piste, the steepest run in Italy. The Rienza ski area, accessed from Dobbiaco, is also known for being a training ground for ski racers. If you want a bit more variety, head over to Kronplatz.
Snowboarding
For some freestyle fun, you can have a go on the kickers and boxes in the snow park on the Helm peak or on the jumps and giant air bag in Dobbiaco. The slopes are great for both beginners and intermediates, but keep in mind that there are a fair few drag lifts and some flat sections that aren’t ideal for boarders.
Cross-country skiing
When it come to cross-country in Italy, Drei Zinnen leads the way with over 200km of trails to explore. There are gentle loops for first-timers and more technical tracks for the more experienced.
