PONTE DI LEGNO, ITALY
Ski holidays in Ponte di Legno
Ponte di Legno occupies a sunny plateau between Italy’s Lombardy and Trentino. Alongside Passo Tonale, the Presena Glacier and Temù, it forms the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area, which is home to 100km of pistes, ranging from 1,121m to 3,016m in altitude.
The resort sits at 1,258m, just below Passo Tonale and only 3km up the road from Temu. It’s surrounded by densely-forested slopes, and most of the 8 runs above the resort are reds or blacks that wind through the trees and provide spectacular panoramas over the valley.
To get to Tonale and explore the wider Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area, all you need to do is take a 14-minute cable car or the free ski bus, where you’ll find vast, open snow fields of long blues and reds. Or you can zip up to the top of the Presena glacier (3,000m) in just 12 minutes and descend between the dramatic rock faces of the massif. If you’re feeling up to it, don’t miss the Paradiso black run, which takes you right back to resort level and reaches a gradient of 45% – a total vertical descent of 1,700m and a piste-length of 11km from the top of the glacier to the base of the Sozzine chairlift.
As well as the Pontedilegno-Tonale pass, which gives you access to 46 slopes and 30 ski lifts, you can buy several passes that open up hundreds more kilometres of skiable terrain. With the Superskirama Dolomiti Adamello Brenta pass, you can ski on 340km of slopes and use 145 lifts. And if that’s not enough, the Ski’n Lombardia pass unlocks the entire Lombardy Region – that’s 300 lifts and 900km of slopes.
The resort has a history of decent snowfall, with 20cm or more during most weeks of the season. Approximately 50% of the pistes are covered by snow-making facilities.
In terms of restaurants, Ponte di Legno is home to the Michelin guide-featured Kro. Located in converted stables in the centre of town, it serves gorgeously-presented examples of Italian Alpine cuisine, mainly centred around mushrooms, meat and game. Capanna Valbione, which you reach on a cable car or by walking 3km, is another top pick. It’s a mountain restaurant that serves traditional local dishes with a spectacular view.
Beyond skiing, there are countless ways to enjoy the snow and the mountain, including
dog sledding, snow tubing, ice driving and snowmobiling. Especially intrepid visitors could try ice climbing or snowkiting.
Indoor activities include a climbing wall, a skating rink, a cinema, and art and First World War museums.
If that sounds too much like hard work, check yourself in for a treatment at the Thermal centre, a six-floor spa that’s currently under construction. Inspired by mountains and glaciers, the glass and steel building will house indoor pools, saunas, Turkish baths, massage rooms, and more.
