Klappen Ski Holidays
Kläppen Ski Holidays
Kläppen is one of Sweden’s most snow-sure resorts, consisting of 26km of pistes - the majority of which are greens and blues. Just a 40-minute transfer from the Scandinavian Mountains Airport, it’s a top pick for families who are after a gentle, quiet ski resort.
Part of the Sälen mountain range, Kläppen is renowned for its convenience. All of its accommodation is ski-in/ski-out, meaning you can click into your gear as soon as you close the door.
You’ll quickly find yourself in Kläppen village centre, from which the only gondola in the entire Sälen ski area (fit with heated seats!) will lift you up to the top of the mountain. Beginners shouldn’t be shy about getting on - the best runs for new starters are at the top, where wide greens and a children-only area await.
From the top of the gondola, you can take greens all the way back to the bottom, including through some lovely sheltered pine woods. There are also a couple of snow parks (including one exclusively for juniors), the Trollslope fun run and even a racing slope for those more confident skiers.
While about 80% of the marked pistes are aimed at beginner skiers, there are some red and black runs to tackle, too. While these blacks are steep, they are also quite short, so if your skiing holiday hinges on advanced skiing, we’d recommend elsewhere.
Kläppen is one of Sweden’s best ski resorts for families. Its ski schools are a big reason - they have passionate instructors who are fluent in English and very friendly. The ski-in/ski-out accommodation is also really useful, while its pretty village centre will make you feel welcome, with its warm timber-clad buildings and classic Scandi feel.
And don’t forget to meet the friendly mascots, Trolle and Trolla!
Après-ski in Kläppen
There is live music on an almost daily basis in Kläppen, with the Halster Bar & Bistro being a key spot to aim for. This spot is located at the Hotel Kurbits, which is at the middle station of the gondola. It has live bands, singers and entertainment from 3pm for a couple of hours.
Certainly worth a visit, this is about as much as there is - Kläppen is generally fairly quiet, and certainly no party town like Val Thorens or St Anton.
Non-ski activities in Kläppen
When you’re not skiing, there are other winter activities to get stuck into, including snowshoe walking, snowmobiling and tobogganing.
Top restaurant picks include the Brasseriet, Persgården (home to gorgeous fresh waffles, just a stone’s throw from the children’s ski area), and Toppstugan, which is at the top of the gondola with beautiful views of the forest, and menu or grab-and-go options.
Of course, you can also go cross-country skiing - there are 37km of these pistes to explore.
